I built a website for a dentist. The domain name is only 3 months old and he is in an extremely competitive area (NYC). So as of now, until the domain ages, SEO won't be very effective for him. There's no way I can get a 3 month old domain name with no back links for keywords like "dentist NYC." Also, Adwords doesn't seem like a very good idea either because the competition is so high that it costs up to $20 per click.

So what can I do to help this guy out and get him some quick business? What are some other options?

Unless they have a HUGE budget, they're pretty much out of luck.

If he is a dentist in NYC he must have a decent budget, right???

If not he might as well just close shop now and save the hassle...

Have you listed him in Yelp and other directories etc?
Does he specialise in any areas eg dentistry for children, orthodontic braces, dental services for the elderly?
There are lots of things you can do but obviously "dentist NYC." will require a decent budget lol

Primarily Facebook? Or are any other social media platforms effective as well? Just adding content, adding fans, and promoting certain deals / specials would work? Can you recommend any good monthly social media companies?

Yes his budget is decent, but what does that matter in terms of what I said? No amount of money would make SEO effective at this point in time. And Adwords - no matter how much money he puts into it, if the return from conversion rate is lower than what he spends per click, then no amount of money would fix this. Assuming he has a big budget, what can he do?

Yes he is in all the major directories with some reviews

Personally I wouldn't concentrate too much on social media.
Yes he needs social profiles for his Business but how many people go on Facebook or Twitter looking for a Dentist?
Adwords will be costly but why the delay in a SEO campaign if you intend to do it at some point in time?
Waiting for the Domain to age before starting SEO doesn't make sense to me.
An aged domain can help if it is purchased but not having one isn't an excuse not to start SEO.
How long do you intend to age it? 12 Months, 24 Months, 5 Years before you start SEO?

Waiting for a domain to age is silly - the competition is going to be building links, getting stronger.

But what is even sillier is trying to rank organically for "dentist NYC" and related keywords...

Just get good with PPC...simple as that. With all the $$ required for organic rankings you can get phone calls now. Set up call tracking, re-targeting, and start to brand this guy.

With something as competitive as this there is no easy way. He is going to have to open the wallet.

Don't spend $$ on social media...useless for a dentist. Once you are pulling a huge ROI for him then you can dabble in it...but any money spend on that is just taking away from a PPC budget.

Name one person that can tell you they found his or her dentist on Facebook or Twitter......nobody.

PPC all the way. Keyword selection is key. Let all the monkeys pay $25 per click for a generic "dentist NYC" keywords...keyword research (real keyword research) will be your best friend.

New York is a Massive City, why aren't you trying to rank him for his immediate vicinity.
Ranking for his local area will be a start, then try ranking for his Borough etc
When he is ranking for those then you can try ranking for "dentist NYC."

I don't know if things are different in the US but if I wanted a Dentist in the UK then searching for "Dentist London" would be useless as there are 100's and I wouldn't want to trek across town for one.

If you have some decent budget, then better go round the MARKETPLACE, check every service, contact all potential service providers, talk to them for a better campaign and get the things done.

Or if you would like to go for SOCIAL MEDIA, BHW has a lot of leaders inSMO. Im prettysure they can get the things done for you very simple and effectively(Personally had an experience).

You interested in a one time fee to set up a PPC campaign? Message me if so. Also what do you mean by "re-targeting"?

Because running a grey-hat / black-hat campaign on his 3 month old website might get it in the sandbox. I already bought one of the packages here on BHW for another website and Google caught it and penalized the site, and that site was years old. The other option is to do it more carefully and slowly - but that's the thing - this guy can't wait months. He needs some immediate results to get his shit going. I intended to wait until 6-7 months before focusing on SEO. What do you recommend that I do?

If you're smart, you won't simply rely on just PPC. If I were you, I'd look into Marketing as a whole.

Charity/non-profit functions with some solid PR will help.
Have him give potential clients novelty items with his branding all over it. I'm sure 10-20 cents for an item isn't burning a hole in his pockets.

Set-up a PPC account for him and get some IMMEDIATE results... long term, rank the long tail keywords in his niche, and think outside the box for his marketing solutions.

Also, leveraging his network will grow his net worth. Associations help. Forums help.

And finding ways to build word of mouth through referral programs.

    Hope this helps.

I didn't realise that you were outsourcing the SEO.
You will need to find a company that specializes in Local SEO.
I don't know how American Post Codes (Zip Codes?) work but in the UK the first part is the general local area, so if I wanted to rank for an area in a London Borough (Ruislip (the Area/Town) in Hillingdon (The Borough) in this example) it would be "Dentist HA4" I would also be trying to rank for the wider general area (The London Borough of Hillingdon) so that would be "Dentist Hillingdon"
It wouldn't be worth my while to rank for "Dentist LONDON" unless the client had deep pockets although I might try "Dentist West London".
If the client was a Plumber/Locksmith or any business that did call outs then ranking for the whole of London would be great.

Do some research, find a Local SEO agency based in New York and check their prices.
Also follow that advice from netmoney1 about PPC

I'd definitely break down that KW.

Do some proper kw research and you'll be able to come up with a few good kws.

You don't need tens of thousands of searches for them to be good kws, especially in his field.

I'd talk to him about running some marketing campaigns/promotions..something like free cleanings for kids. Obviously kids aren't going to go by themselves, up-sale the parent once they're there.

It's really this simple, if he wants traffic now he has to spend money.

The PPC thing, when done right, will bring in customers immediately, and give you proven keywords for you to target with your SEO budget.

Anyone who is an agency with Google can get a $100 coupon for a new customer to use after they have spent $50 (I know I can with my agency account). This gives you $150 worth of ads to use to refine a small campaign.

Offline flyers is another way of bringing new customers to a local business quickly.

To get SEO up and running quickly you need to be very aggressive everywhere but with link building.

You need to get as many quality citations as you can, unless you have all of them, you do not have enough, and you should be constantly looking for new ones. The only way to do that is run regular reports. (PM me if you need this)

You need to make sure that whoever is dong these citations knows how to do them, especially consistency wise. If you have them done by an auto submitter you are screwing up. Don't forget to check with every radio station and newspaper in the service area to see if they have a local business directory. While you are at it, offer to do an interview or article for them if they need filler content.

You need very high quality content on the site for keyword targeting, and at first you need to really do your research and find the easy long tails. You usually can find some words that can be ranked by citations and on-page seo only, no matter the market.

On the pages with these keyword articles, you need someone who really knows on page SEO to optimize ALL of the page, not just the meta information.

List with local directries, make web 2.0's in the business name (get that NAP out there), instead of as if they are not related to your site. These properties are you promoting your site, and they need to all be 100 percent original, and have your NAP visible in the public description.

Understand what NAP is (use (XXX) XXX-XXXX for the phone), and instead of being like a normal SEO, think NAP citation building rather than backlink building at the start.

Start running advertisements in the free directories, but list your nap there in your ad too. Write keyword optimized mini articles for the ad, you may luck out and rank the ad for a while.

Find a reason to put out a real press release, make a reason if you have to (give free checkups to returning veterans, hold a children's dental class, sponsor a pop warner team, look at he doctor's social schedule for newsworthy events, spend a day with habitat for humanity). Make these real press releases distributed to news aggregators not stuck on press reease websites. Try to get into Google news.

Plan on 2 PR's a month of you can create fodder for the articles.

Contact all those local radio and newspapers and deliver a copy of these PR's to them in addition to those distributed by the press release service, send it to the attention of the news editor for radio stations, and the city desk for newspapers.

Since you are in NY, look for community tied keywords, and zip codes for the local area. Your best chance at bringing in paying customers with SEO fastest is to find long tail keywords with low competition that people are running a lot of PPC ads for.

These are traffic keywords that other people are not targeting because the keywords are so obvious that they think they are too hard to rank.

Good quality citations and razor sharp on page SEO will rank these keywords faster than you might think.

Build only good, RELATED, quality links to and from your site, and ignore the follow attribute.

You need NAP in every single web page on his site in schema code.

    For starters...

    No, sorry.

Anyone that is going to offer to set it up for a "one time fee" is going to just throw a bunch of shit together....just to say they built a campaign. It needs constant testing and review. It is an on-going process.
