First off, don't under estimate Google Keyword Planner. Learn it. But other than that there are some free tools, like Keyword Shitter that I like. You can start with Google Keyword Planner, find a good keyword and then dump it into the Keyword Shitter and then come up with a bunch more keywords. Then take each of those and dump them back into Google Keyword Planner. You can go back and forth until you amass a quite a few options. This is a good way to sift through keywords for more leads. Best of all its free.

Google products always have good reviews for its performance.

I hate google planner. I never got over Google taking away the REAL keyword tool.
Recently I found Wordstream. Its so so.
I think I will use SEMrush.

Insanely good are Ahrefs and Semrush. Possibily combined. Forget the free tools. Google's Keyword planner is good for one thing only and that's for checking volume & cpc. As for suggestions it's gonna underreport keywords. It may offer some alternatives, however... this is the way I dig out all the alternatives that poor Google will never give you:

I use Semrush and export all the keywords top competitors rank for. I also check for competitors of competitors as that reveals even more ideas. Then I export all the keywords of them all, insert into Excel, remove duplicates. Now I have a list that can be entered into Google Keyword planner and have it returned with search volume. Mind that Semrush or Ahrefs will only give you search volume for US. If you are after worldwide search volume, then Google is your thing.

Then you have a ton of keywords to vet. You throw out the ones you don't need and create groups of sub-subjects. This creates and outline of your site structure.

There are other tools available that base their results on Google search suggestions yet these miss so many of them, not to mention alternative ones.

So, there. Ahrefs + Semrush + Google planner. Then manual labor and then voila you have it all. Then content, then links, then bank.

One other tool: Spyfu. when comparing your site (if you have it already) against competition. Very useful in grasping how far ahead they are with their keyword pool. And you just grab the keywords they are using (ranking) and you are not. Actually Semrush has such comparisons too, but spyfu is more graphic in that department. Sometimes a pie chart will wake you up more than a list of keywords side by side.

KeywordRevealer works good for me. You can't go wrong with the paid version.

I'm sold to keywords revealer. Very solid tool as you can enter one keyword and they'll show you LSI to check competition. The only "bad" of it is you need a paid subscription. Anyway, nothing worthy is free nowadays
