    Hey guys!

I am wondering what my chances are ranking highly competitive keywords for a news blog that aims to go against the likes of The Huffington Post, CNN, BBC 'etc'.
I always have a different take on popular news topics and have unique and interesting content. I plan to use social media for initial promotion and audience retention. As I am in this for the long haul, I plan to use only WhiteHat SEO. I come up with the content, an ivy league English major working at a major news corporation edits my work and the article goes live.
Any tips on ranking highly competitive keywords with WhiteHat? (Assume solid on-page SEO and Yoast SEO and news plugins, SSL and 96 Google insights pagespeed)
    Thanks!

    Ciao.

With all joking aside, what will you do to make your website unique? Who will you be targeting and why should they read your news articles? If you take a look at those websites you listed, all of them have a specific target audience.

    • BBC targets older Europeans.
    • Huffington Post targets pseudo-intellectuals in Starbucks
    • CNN targets 25 to

Not all of those target demographics are true, but you get the point. If you have a target demographic that you can appeal to and a real strategy in mind, then I think you can at least get a decent news website going.

I don't own a news site, so take this advice with a grain of salt.

    Thanks for your reply.

My target audience would be pseudo intellectual teens-early 40 year olds. Think of my news blog as a cross between The Huffington Post and The Atlantic. I have an extreme clickbait name for the blog/brand(if you see or hear the name you will never forget it, ever), especially for pseudo-intellectual teens and starbucksters.

And about the content, as I mentioned above I usually have a unique and interesting take on news topics. If I don't, I will find one. I'm not a very good writer and I plan to redress that by partnering with a good editor who works at a news corp.
