Well it was bound to happen, I guess I actually have been a little annoying to some people

Well it was bound to happen after making so many posts in the last couple months and without really getting any flames over anything. But tonight after finally getting past the 800 post count I finally got a neg rep from someone that takes issue with the fact that he thinks I try to act like a mod, and I reference my own posts WAY too much. That's not actually why I do any of that, so I thought I'd make this post to let you know a little about how I think. I'm not all that worried about the -rep, I figure that's just a little heads up letting me know I come across a little more annoying than I'd like. That's easy enough to work on in my future posts.

So first off, whenever I point out the rules to people it isn't because I'm trying to be like a mod. If that was the case I would have applied last month when they decided to add some more. In fact I hardly ever even report anyone to the mods unless its some new member spamming sales pitches across all the forums. Everyone else I just try to give some information about how I see things work before they actually do run afoul of the mods. In general I've found in most forums it's a lot better when someone learns about the rules from other members that aren't mods, because when it reaches the point that a mod has to let them know it results in a ban. I may be a bit of a know-it-all sometimes but I'm not a mod wanna-be, I really am trying to help the people I reply to. If they ever actually do follow the links I give the information will help them out.

A lot of people might think pointing out the rules seems like being a kiss ass, but that's really not the case either. I've also pointed out things on this forum in which I think the mods aren't in the right about on occassion as well. It really just comes from a tendency as I get older to want to give other people a chance to learn from my experiences instead of having to learn from their own mistakes. I think it's just part of becoming an older person. I used to laugh at my dad about it when I was younger myself. Now that I'm on the other side, I understand him a lot better now. I've been online since the 1980's and so I have a lot of apparently antiquated ideas of netiquette. Things changed a lot when everyone got access to the www, and a lot of us old timers still get frustrated sometimes at the lack of respect for the established social conventions that ensued after that. Because of that I go out of my way sometimes to clue people in. Again thats just an old timer thing.

Since someone has an issue with me pointing to my own posts a lot, I'll assume others might also. To make them happy I went ahead and deleted the reference to my own post in the latest thread that was an issue. In an effort to be a little less annoying I'll try to stop referencing my own posts as much when I make replies in the future. Most of the time I do it because the other post is actually part of my answer and it's simpler to just reference the other post rather than repost it in another thread. Especially if it's the third or fourth thread asking the same question.

I think this forum has about the best group of people that get along together and help each other out of any forum I've been on for a long time. In spite of a lot of the useless anti-bhw propaganda out on the wild wild web, the people in this forum are about sharing with each other and helping each other out, and not about making a profit off each other like in many other forums. Occassionally there are problems, but they are the exception not the rule. It's funny when you hear people on other forums or blogs accusing bhw of that very thing, when it's the least like that of any marketing forum I've come across.

Anyway it's all good. I just thought I'd let you all know a little about why I post a lot of the things I do.

Good Luck in all your ventures,
    Wolf

    Don't worry about it buddy.

There will always be jerks everywhere you go; from what I've seen your posts are quality and have helped me out.

Now that you have the 800 posts, start making some big money again! ;)

Rep does not matter anyway. I got negative reps for stupid reasons but now I don't care about it anymore and focus on making money :D

Thanks Virus. Actually I'm not really worried about the rep, That was the first neg since I first started trying to get enough posts to join Jr.Vip. One of the first few posts got me 3 neg reps for bumping an old thread, even though the answer actually added some additional value to the old thread. Once I had enough posts that people started knowing how I think I didn't get anymore untill this one. So if you include all the posts that don't count like the lounge, etc. I've actually made well over 800 posts without any neg reps or flames. I was kind of surprised my post have been accepted so well overall, but definately appreciate all the support.

The only reason I made this thread is cause I thought what the guy said waranted an explanation from me. I mostly wanted to say that I'm not trying to be a mod. When I explain the rules to anyone it really is because I'm trying to help them avoid future problems.

As well as mentioning the thing about when I reference other threads. I do it because the reference is actually part of my answer, if not all of it. What's funny is that I don't just reference my own threads anyway. I'll post a reference to anything that I think will give some help to the person I'm replying to. Sometimes I also include links to some of my threads in my sig. Well is a little bit of vanity, but I also think that some of the new people might get some value out of them. I kinda change up my sig fairly often anyway.

I have made a lot of posts lately so it kinda made me stand out a little as a know-it-all maybe. I guess sometimes I am a little but the only reason I was posting so much was to get those bright shiny stars. LOL. Kind of silly cause they don't actually mean anything, but sometimes you just want something.

I really did try to make sure there was at least some value to my posts. It wasn't as easy as you would think to make that many posts in such a short time and still keep some level of quality. At least I didn't just make a bunch of thankyou posts to inflate my post count. I hate it when people do that, so I try real hard to make sure my posts are at least somewhat worthwhile. After making so many so fast though I'm sure it's open to debate about the quality on a few of them. LOL

Grey your a great poster, ignore it and keep doing what you do. I just tried to rep you in an attempt to help correct a great injustice, but apparently I need to "spread some more rep around" before that can happen ;)

Ignore them... Most of them are frustrated bunch of people who are not happy because they can't outshine you... LOL some times becoming Good is problem for others... Lots of people doesn't want to help others and if some one helps they get problem... They think you are becoming smart ass... LMAO...

I believe when some issue is already discussed then why go again and start from scratch, why not post reference of that thread where people can get head start or may solve their problem... If this happens to by my post then what can i do about it...

    This.

I've said it before and I'll say it again: You're awesome for sticking it to those who are too lazy to read up. If anything they should be thanking you for pointing (referencing) the threads out to them.

Cheers, mate and all the best!

I look at thanks more as rep than I do rep itself, as I think most people here do. If you are contributing and helping others you're bound to get thanks, but at the end of the day it's all just a number. Be good to the community and the community is good to you.

I too am an old man. From my experience it's sometimes real hard to teach younger people anything. All you can do is try.

Ignorance is curable. Stupidity is forever !

That's true, technically it is crossposting. but like I said in a previous post if there's something in another thread I wrote then a lot of times it just makes sense to post the link instead of duplicating the post. It's only included when it actually pertains to the discussion, and I also link to a lot of other pertinent threads that aren't mine. Even when I include links to threads in my signature, they're just links to basic information threads that might help people getting started. Not really that much different than linking to a bst thread if I was selling something, except that when I do it there isn't anything to buy. lol
Well like I said it wasn't so much worrying about the neg rep itself or even getting worked up about it, so much as wanting to address the included comment.
Yeah I try to focus on the important things always. :)
I usually listen to rock, but thanks for the jazz video. It's kinda nice to listen to something mellow for a change. I should do that more often. lol
Sadly my mom died when I was young, and my dad passed three years ago. But it's all good they're always with me in my heart. Thanks for the sentiment though. It's appreciated. :)

You always make some really good posts. I've learned a lot by reading many of your threads, so thanks for that as well.

just gave you some rep back, you should feel lucky because your the 1st person ive repped on this forum :p. It was well deserved, but anyways your post are great and its nice how you explain everything with great detail and actually spend time thinking on something useful to post. Theres assholes all over the internet and im sure you know that since you've been in the game since before i was born :p and you obviously ran into 1 of them today. so just brush that shit off and continue making good post and just ignore all the assholes because they will just continue to be assholes and theres not much that can change them (except for a swift punch to the jaw, but thats kind of hard to accomplish from behind a computer screen).

That's too bad! I've learned more from guys like you and Grizzy, who lend their time and experience, than anyone else on this board.

BTW, I thought you were a mod too. Thanks to that because I can't tell you how many times I've read a post and saw you refer someone to a rule that I knew nothing about. It's saved me from making an ass out of myself on a few occasions. ;)

I don't know if you're as old as me (50) but please keep spankin' the youngins and keep contributing...The mods can't be everywhere at all times...:)

    Rep given as well.

You are one of the few members here who reads out a whole thread and gives very meaningful and sincerely helpful answers that are not general in nature. Whoever gave you a negative rep probably hit the wrong toggle switch by mistake :)

lol, GreyWolf, it seems you have more lovers than haters here
you're at +10 atm than before you started the thread
and at the same time you write history on bhw: you'll be the first member ever who comes out as a winner from this kind of (neg rep) thread :)

@HoNeYBiRD - Well like I said the thread wasn't so much about getting a neg rep, it was more about addressing what it was given for. I've told many other members the same thing about not worrying about the rep. So, while I really do appreciate all the rep, the point of the thread was to explain why I participate the way I do.

I just wanted to let people know why I make the posts about the rules, and why I link to other threads sometimes. I think by regular members letting the new people know the rules it actually does help out the mods, so that they can focus more on keeping the spammers and scammers at bay. But more importantly I think it helps a forum when the existing members help the new members learn the rules.

Even if ocassionally I do flame a noob for a stupid post, I try to maintain a reasonable level of respect, and provide some useful information they can learn from. Someone recently called one of those posts the most polite flame they'd ever read. LOL

That's how it used to work on usenet, and forums are the same type of environment just with a lot more features and ease of use. Usenet and the early forums are where the term netiquette originated, and the only way new members will learn is for the existing members to teach them. Just because were cool with using blackhat methods doesn't mean we shouldn't be civilized.

I just try to do what I can.

edit - Like I said I probably came across a lot worse recently because I was posting so many comments everyday. Now that I have my 5 shiny stars I can go back to a more normal amount of posting. It would take way too much work to keep at it to the next level, and I really do need to get back to work trying to make more money.

Thanks for your comment and words of encouragement. :beerchug:

Some folks just get their jollies from being negative - and we've all experienced that. Don't let whoever even drizzle on your parade because Grey, I recall often coming across posts by you and agreeing from personal experience or taking something new away from it. And by the way, on the point about it being funny that folks often feel (out of nowhere) that BHW is a forum full of people just ripping each other off, I have to agree and I also find it funny. But the reason is simple - if you just a book by it's cover, you'll never really know the story.
