Well Google+ just became the most awesome spamming platform ever.

    http://news.cnet.com/8301-1023_3-57616983-93/google-begins-to-merge-google-gmail-contacts/

Google took a leap toward integrating Gmail and Google+ on Thursday as the company announced that you can now send an e-mail to anybody on Google+, even if you don't have their e-mail address.

The messaging option, which Gmail product manager David Nachum said will be rolling out to all Gmail users over the next few days, shares user names from Google+ in your Gmail contacts list, but not Gmail addresses. Those are only shared once the recipient has responded to your e-mail. The screenshot above shows how Gmail differentiates between Gmail contacts and Google+ contacts.

Basically, Google is allowing Google+ users to e-mail Gmail account owners, without actually learning what their Gmail address is until the person responds. E-mails received from Google+ users that you don't know will appear in your Primary Inbox category, but if the sender is not in your Circles, the e-mail will be filtered to your Social Inbox category. Google has created a Help page to assist people with the feature.

When you open the e-mail, you can choose whether or not to add the sender to your Circles. The person will be able to e-mail you only once, until you decide how to manage their e-mail. If you respond via Gmail, they obviously will learn your Gmail address. This, Google said, should cut down on spam and abusive e-mails.

Google has provided an opt-out measure(GOOGLE WAVE LOL LOL LOL LOL GOOGLE WAVE LOL LOL LOL LOL GOOGLE WAVE LOL LOL LOL LOL), so that you can choose whether anyone on Google+ can e-mail you, or whether you want to restrict it to Extended Circles, Circles, or disable it entirely. Google+ users who are celebrities, at least on Google+, will have a different default setting. For them, their default setting will be people in their Circles, not everybody on Google+.

Nachum said that people will receive an e-mail in their Gmail inbox when the feature has been activated, which will include a link to your Gmail settings to disable it if you want. All new Google account users will receive the warning e-mail as well.

Just another way to stuff Google+ down our throats. This give marketers an incentive to utilize and promote Google + now.

So whats the hype about ? If you send an email to a stranger using this it will land in their Social tab - not in the inbox. Also there are still G's rate limits so not a big difference imo .

Google+ names can be mined from youtube comments and from everywhere on the WWW....basically, the world's entire list of gmail accounts can be scraped and mailed to, you don't need to know the @gmail.com address.....

Ok, but I can already message any YouTube channel and a email will be sent to their social tab.

I don't think Google will ever face the fact that G+ just sucks.

I agree but you will still have to use google's platform to send those messages right ? and its limited to something like 200 per hour ? isnt it ?

But Google has pretty good spam protection, so unless your writing is impeccable or the email comes from a legitimate account, I would think that this doesn't help much. Also, I'd imagine that they'll add new spam protections against emails from new or spammy Google+ accounts.

and thats the email they sent out regarding this :
"Gmail update: Reach more people you knowEver wanted to email someone you know, but haven't yet exchanged email addresses? Starting this week, when you're composing a new email, Gmail will suggest your Google+ connections as recipients, even if you haven't exchanged email addresses yet.

How it works with email addresses
Emailing Google+ connections works a bit differently to protect the privacy of email addresses. Your email address isn't visible to your Google+ connections until you send them an email, and their email addresses are not visible to you until they respond.

Receiving email from people outside your circles
If you receive an email from someone outside your circles, it will be filtered into the Social category of the inbox (if enabled) and only after you respond or add them to your circles, can they start another conversation with you.

How to control who can contact you
You're in control of whether people can reach you with a new setting in Gmail on the desktop. To learn more, check out the Help Center.

It probably is limited indeed. But I'm sure blackhats can think of ways around this ;)
