Ok Im still new to IM, so please dont laugh to hard if this is a rookie question. One of my sites is showing up #9 threw rank tracker, when I load up google its coming up as #8, ok 1 spot, no big deal, but when a friend loaded up google its coming up 4th on his screen!? Why is this? I also decided to put the site info into MS to see what has shown up so far, and I see something that TOTALLY throws me for a loop! First off MS is showing that I have 30 pages indexed, which I dont... Second off it is showing 10,093 backlinks!? Ive ordered 420 social bookmarks and thats it for it so far. To top it all off its saying the site is PR 5!? Theres no way this is possible!? The site is less than 2 months old, and as Ive said the only thing I have done is get 420 social bookmarks...

Meanwhile another one of my sites is still not showing in the top 100, its an EMD, with a very easy keyword... It was also hit with 420 bookmarks, and is still showing 0 backlinks according to MS....

Bought the domain not even 2 months ago. Is there a possibility it could have been owned before and thats how this happened? Or is it just an MS error?

I accidentally bought an older domain. Took some times but the back links showed up and I was like WTF where did these little bad boys come from? Anyways maybe your a lucky bastard and grabbed an old expired pr5.

    Heres some tips

OK to check your rank: traffic travis

    To check back links: http://majesticseo.com

To check if your site was something else: http://www.archive.org/web/web.php (this stores caches of sites and you can check old versions of stuff, self explanatory when you use it.)

and run your site thru a PR checker

Just google "PR checker" and pick on youll see ;)

    that's normal

google is trying to "personalize" their results

for example, when i log onto google on a mac, and I google "tech support forums" I find that I get more mac oriented results. When I do it on my pc, I find I get more PC oriented results

same shifts for geography, user search history and interests, and a number of other factors

When using Majestic SEO it says 25 refering domains, 36 external backlinks,23 Referring IP addresses, 23 are Class C subnets, 52 Indexed URLs

Im not exactly sure what all of that really means, but that doesnt seem to add up to 10k backlinks to me?

EDIT: AHH! When I click Historic Data instead of Fresh Data theres the backlinks!

    Referring Domains

    191

    External Backlinks

    10,093

    78 Referring IP addresses

    68 are Class C subnets

    980 Indexed URLs

This obviously must have been a site before, because of the fact they are showing up in historic and not now, Im assuming I no longer really have those backlinks? Why is that?

Nice snag bro! Ok heres what you do if your using wordpress. Grab the 404-to-start plugin. What it does is redirects all the old dead urls to start so in theory you will keep alot of the link juice. Build back links like normal, and the next PR update should look good for ya. Hell you could probably sell some links even. :)

These days Google custom-tailors search results to a particular user (web record), location, browser language, and what not. So, more often than not different users would see different results, sometimes dozens of positions apart. :( Hard to explain that to clients.

Besides, have you heard about the latest new feature - SPYW (Search plus Your World), now, this is totally crazy, man. Here is a post to read on this topic.

As for checking backlinks, different tools might show you different count, depending on where they get their info from. Doesn't mean they are bad, though. I'd recommend SEO Spyglass, it's one of the most accurate. But, like I said, no backlink checker is 100% accurate.

What happens if they were SB blasts though? Could I get Google slapped for doing that?

No one can tell me if I risk a google slap by using that plugin to regrab those backlinks? Im worried about if they may be SB blasts or something like that?
