Trying to figure out what makes an effective giveaways. I noticed this one:
    https://www.instagram.com/p/BWk5LIFl1s_/?taken-by=gemologue

You are told to follow, like the post, then go the @user named and repeat the steps until you come back to the account you began with.
I followed the trail and there was over 40 big bloggers before I came back the start account.
    1. Who would go through the hassle of doing these 3 steps x 40 accounts just for a chance in a million to win an iphone, a polaroid and some cheap makeup? Teenagers?
    2. No brand is mentioned, so is it just a scheme to boost followers and engagement on this post?

What do you think of this? I am baffled...

It sounds like everyone did it for the same reason as you and ended up with the same question

I went about 5 profiles in. The lanague changed 3 times then I forgot who the first account was and exited. Fun little game/trick to play on your followers lol

I have seen so many do it and I have followed the people in those chains to see how many people are involved and also saw that it is about 30 or 40 accounts, which is just too much. I had the same question, who would actually follow all those steps and stay a follower. So first, yes, they do it to get followers and yes, it works. I know people who have done it and it seems to work fairly well. A lot unfollow after the giveaway is over but a lot also stay. Especially if your account is already bigger and has good content, people are more likely to stay a follower. So I guess it works for some people but it is just also really annoying to see. But a lot of followers probably will unfollow because you don't want to see giveaways all the time spamming people telling them to follow 40 accounts and a lot of them do it not just once

But why would an account with 1.6Million followers want to participate with accounts that have "only" 180K ?

This is normal and proven strategy. It is called a "loop giveaway" It is pretty common but in my opinion lame. It works but if the loop is too big (50 feeds in a chain), users will get bored. THey also unfollow after the loop contest is over.

I guess bloggers are realizing that sharing their user base is mutually beneficial.
One of the accounts (which I was following) 160K in size and has gained nearly 15K followers with this operation.
Even if half leave it's still a good deal.

Host of the loop makes money. They charge each feed as much as $70-150 to be in the loop to buy those expensive giveaways (Macbook Pro, Canon full frame DSLR cameras). But there has been some articles on how scammy it is, as if the winners are not really random.

You mean that the host will collect more money than the prizes cost?

I make jewelry, and after seeing this I'm thinking about contacting 10 wedding photographers with roughly the same follower count, and offering them a solid gold and gem ring worth $650 as a prize for a looped giveaway. If they are interested maybe it's a way to jumpstart my IG account?

Yep. The ones I saw charged $70 to be in the loop. Do the math, 25 accounts X 70 = 1,750 for an iPad? Some loops get high as 50 users. The fee covers the cost of the prize and 'administrative' duties on running the campaign.

What happens if you do this loop giveaway with a 2k followers account?
Will it have a really bad decline in followers?

So usually the host is the one that kind of organizes the giveaway and makes some money. Often, the big accounts 2Mill won't pay but only the ones with lower followers do. If you have under a specific mark of followers they make you pay double or triple what others above it pay.
And I have seen a 300k account increase by about 70k then drop a bunch maybe 20/30k. A 5k account increased by about 2k but only 500 stayed.
And really I think the problem which makes them spammy and scammy is that they have too many people in the loop it's just annoying and about the winners, I don't think there is anyone actually going through the comments and followers because it's too many, they probably just try to find one person that followed everyone

Yeah sure, but if the prize is really tempting and the loop is about 10 accounts, then is should be acceptable to the users no?

I believe, the intention was just to get more interactions, also the loop is really lame... the promo is too aggressive, even the "giveaway" doesn't justify it

    yes that one's just crazy.
They just re-posted today and the account I'm following still got another 1000 participants, so another 1000 followers.

Works like a charm. This has been going on since IG launched. Nothing new here at all.
