The attack on Pearl Harbor, was a surprise military strike by the Imperial Japanese Navy against the United States naval base at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii Territory, on the morning of December 7, 1941. The attack led to the United States' entry into World War II.

Japan intended the attack as a preventive action to keep the U.S. Pacific Fleet from interfering with military actions the Empire of Japan planned in Southeast Asia against overseas territories of the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, and the United States. Over the next seven hours there were coordinated Japanese attacks on the U.S.-held Philippines, Guam and Wake Island and on the British Empire in Malaya, Singapore, and Hong Kong.

The attack commenced at 7:48 a.m. Hawaiian Time. The base was attacked by 353 Imperial Japanese fighter planes, bombers, and torpedo planes in two waves, launched from six aircraft carriers. All eight U.S. Navy battleships were damaged, with four sunk. All but the USS Arizona (BB-39) were later raised, and six were returned to service and went on to fight in the war. The Japanese also sank or damaged three cruisers, three destroyers, an anti-aircraft training ship, and one minelayer. 188 U.S. aircraft were destroyed; 2,403 Americans were killed and 1,178 others were wounded. Important base installations such as the power station, shipyard, maintenance, and fuel and torpedo storage facilities, as well as the submarine piers and headquarters building (also home of the intelligence section) were not attacked. Japanese losses were light: 29 aircraft and five midget submarines lost, and 64 servicemen killed.

The attack came as a profound shock to the American people and led directly to the American entry into World War II in both the Pacific and European theaters. The following day, December 8, the United States declared war on Japan. Domestic support for non-interventionism, which had been fading since the Fall of France in 1940, disappeared. Clandestine support of the United Kingdom (e.g., the Neutrality Patrol) was replaced by active alliance. Subsequent operations by the U.S. prompted Nazi Germany and Fascist Italy to declare war on the U.S. on December 11, which was reciprocated by the U.S. the same day.

There were numerous historical precedents for unannounced military action by Japan. However, the lack of any formal warning, particularly while negotiations were still apparently ongoing, led President Franklin D. Roosevelt to proclaim December 7, 1941, "a date which will live in infamy". Because the attack happened without a declaration of war and without explicit warning, the attack on Pearl Harbor was judged by the Tokyo Trials to be a war crime.

The USS Arizona War Memorial in Pearl Harbor is built on the hull of the sunken ship itself:

Crazy and solemn to imagine that 1,200 people died right there in or around that ship.

I have some pictures from my honeymoon of Pearl Harbor and USS Arizona War Memorial. It was very emotional seeing how many people lost their lives. Thanks for the pics @Sherbert Hoover. I will try to upload some of the ones I have myself.

One of the bigger coincidences of Pearl Harbor is that there was supposed be 3 Carrier ships in Pearl Harbor, but 2 were delayed from returning due to bad weather and the other was in San Diego getting replacement work done. Had those 3 ships got hit that day it would have been much harder for the American troops to wage war like they did. There was 7 carriers total at the time I believe the US had and not one was docked at Pearl Harbor.

Another curious fact is that there was radio silence from Japan for 8 to 10 hours before the attack. Which led the intelligence agencies in Washington to write a memo saying an attack was imminent.

But there was a Japanese envoy in Washington and nobody believed it was gonna happen.

This memo which was prepared early was sent hours too late which to this day is fuel for conspiracy theories, as many suspect the military industrial complex wanted to get into the war at that point and this report could have been delayed on purpose.

I had heard about that one (the radio silence). I could only imagine mass communication was difficult back then.

Hey @BassTrackerBoats, what was mass communication like in the 1940's?

Yes, it gives you an indication of the size of the old battleships.

The Germans at this time were developing the smaller pocket battleships, which were faster, more maneuverable but still heavily armed.

I studied all the conspiracies last year, it does have a certain air of suspicion hanging over it, but still a tragic event.

As others mentioned, it's strange how the actual "firepower" of the Navy was conveniently not there.

If it ever came out that they did indeed know about it beforehand, n matter how tactical their plan was, there'd be riots I reckon.

Have any of you watched "Person of interest" ?

I have not seen Person of Interest.

But I have seen is a documentary about Operation Northwoods. They wanted to shoot down an American civilian plane over Cuba in order to justify a full out invasion.

The curious fact is: on the years leading to 9/11 a document somewhere where the hawks revived the idea of Operation Northwoods and they said they needed "a new Pearl Harbour".

Coincidence or not the intelligence about 9/11 also got there late, and in the world's most fortified airspace not a single fighter intercepted planes that flew for hours to their targets Just like Pearl Harbour, the defenses were not there on 9/11 and the intelligence came in late.
