5 years ago I did SEO on my company website and was ranking great for those 5 years then just checked my rankings again as well as saw a drop in business the last few months.

when I checked my analytics from last year to this year I see a 47% drop in traffic which started at around October of 2011.

Does anyone know how or why I would receive such a drop after 5years of ranking so well?

Any ideas how I can go about getting back up in the ranks?

You may have incurred a penalty. See if the traffic drop dates match up with Google updates around that time.

Best way I have found to check if you have received a penalty is to copy a paragraph from your page which you think is penalized and copy into Google (without quotes). If your site is not listed #1 then it is likely you have been hit by some form of penalty (manual or otherwise). Recovery could just be a case of riding it out until it is lifted (if it's automated). If it's a manual penalty then it might be a bit harder.

It's most likely not a penalty, but algorithmic. Your second tier links were most likely devalued, which in turn devalues your money site pages they were pointing too. I don't get how people are surprised when their site takes a shit after building crap tier two sites and then throwing a ton of junk links to them. Even if you get away with it after 5 years. Not saying this is the case because I would need way more details.

I am not surprised that my traffic has dropped at all. I knew 5 years ago I was taking short cuts and it would eventually catch up to me. However now that it has I would like to figure out how to get back up in ranks.

I do not think I am being penalized from google. I checked my webmaster tools and have not seen any warnings. Also I see some of the 2nd tier links in the rankings so some are getting through. Could it be Google is passing the pagerank and keywords up to the 1st tier page making it stronger but not for all the keywords I have optimized for?

I will start working on my social presence to boost my websites ASAP.

In the past I used scrapebox, article marketing robot, xrummer and various other tools to achieve my top rankings. (Which I am sure is hurting me now)

Also most of the content on the website is spun 80% and higher. Has there been any breakthrough with spun content and google recognizing it? I spun the content because I changed the city and didn't want to copy the same content over and over for 10 different cities I am using.

    Does link building still work?

any advice would be gratefully appreciated.

Its definitely not a matter of penalty but more algorithmic and technical in nature. Lot has changed since you did SEO and i am sure you are aware of that as well. Link building still works but not as much as it would have during the medieval era. Here is where you can begin with.

    1. Great content- Create awesome content that pulls your target crowd and the potential ones as well. There is really no alternative to it. Serve the purpose of your audience first.

    2. Run a competition - Although not much preached. This is actually a great way to get those links back to your website. Run something relevant which would actually bring in a lot of other blogs engage bunch of social media buffs who are essentially looking at you. I dont see a reason this shouldnt boost your traffic

    3. Flood Twitter, G+ or FB with your content- That's pretty much self explanatory. A link back to your website from G+ or twitter is an alarm to google of some velocity and the same gets reflected in web search.

    Good Luck!

You build links long ago and expect your niche to be static with no upcoming site/competitor and we are talking about 5yrs here..

C'mon, man you don't own the SERP, you have to continually feed your site to retain it's spot if it gets push away..

@impishme84 thank you very much I will start working on that ASAP

@john1444 the niche is a local business and there is not really SEO competition from other websites, that is how I have kept my rankings for 5 years with no work. Only have Google's last update in October have I seen problems and traffic decline.
