So I have been reading the horror stories of people getting the letters from google webmaster about their websites having unnatural links, then getting penalised shortly after... and this happening to LEGIT sites that have been up for years.

Well, I have legit client websites, and while none of been hit, the posts I've been reading have scared the **** out of me, because if I mess up, tonnes of people will lose their jobs since these companies rely on their websites and google to bring in the $$$.

So QUESTION: Is this just happening to a select few - and them all gathering together and talking about it - or is this actually a widespread thing?

i have a legit site and it happened to me, but i was using black hat methods so it really just depends how you have been promoting your sites...

    It will depend for sure..

If you have more shitty links that higher ones. Problems may occur.

I've been straight black as night blasting a few of my sites with a variety of link types all while hooked up to GWT and no letter yet :)

I believe most of it is from truly abnormal link building. Look at it this way, when is some micro site really going to have 1000 high PR blogs posting about them overnight? I'm sorry it's easy to tell when something is viral and when it isn't. People need to use their heads a bit, use a steady link velocity, and pray Google doesn't slap them with its E-penis.

It's all about diversity. As always it has to look natural. Use different anchor texts and spinn everything possible when it's from offsite. Use very different type of backlinks. For example I created a screensaver and sent it to software directories and so on... I'm using greyhat/blackhat techniques since a while and never got a letter.

So I have been reading the horror stories of people getting the letters
Same here but the only thing that?s consistent is the email and a drop in rankings
Now we all know google is a marketing machine first and a search engine second as it needs to make more and more money for it?s share holders.
Problem is we have broken it?s algorithm and now its fighting back a little.
We all know sites can get a human review, but up till now that?s been for on page stuff only. What if its now been extended to of page stuff.
It would take time for the outworks to cover all the top ranked sites, and depending on how many links are checked some sites could escape a penalty others would just crash and burn.
But why the email is it just part of the google smoke and mirrors game?

Maybe the letter/email is fake, designed to paralyze you with fear into inaction?

    UAW - Unique Article Wizard
    BMR - Build My Rank
    Linkvana

I use all of these, as I'm sure many of you here do too, and I've seen messages relating to some the sites I work one where I've syndicated content via these systems. Using these networks is the only common denominator across my link building strategy.

I had a suspicion however I now strongly believe that Google is signed up to any and all of these networks and they have full time members of staff submitting content out to these networks covering all categories to gather intel on the sites these posts get published on. Then they're taking these lists of URL's and working them into their algorithm, once in place they then click submit and boom auto emails going out to any sites in Webmaster Tools.

This is what I'd do if I were Google... And it finally looks like article syndication and blog networks are dead as a source for building links....

Or even maybe Google outsources content writing + hiring VA from Odesk to submit the articles to these blog networks? I doubt, man :) Somehow it doesn't sound professionally for them to do that manually.

They haven't sent 700,000 warnings in last 2 months so it's pretty widespread and looks like they now may be targeting article sites too.

These High Pr blogs are easy to track in my opinion based on their high OBLs. I am currently building a lot of web 2.0 manually linking to my money sites and using High Pr blogs site to link to web 2.0 sites. Its working well for me, at least.

i have only one site in my network that bmr was used on,
bmr was only a VERY small part of that site's link profile though
and that site recently saw a two place drop in rankings, it was an emd for a certain keyword, and was consistently rank#1
last week it dropped to rank#3, even though i've been running linking services for it still
i think the only reason i didn't get the notice for it, was because it was only a very very small part of my linking profile, and i had a lot of authority links pointing to it that were in no way connected to bmr

Yeah, this is a widespread crack down.

Google sent out more notices of violation in the first two months of 2012 then all of 2011.

I wish I knew the exact reason for my penalty...I have concluded its one of three things 1) anchor text over optimization 2) high pr home page backlinks 3) private blog networks....and you know what, it might be a combination of all three...

Not sure exactly what to do at this point, but I have been increasing my social signals on twitter, google+, and facebook to try something new...too early to tell if this is working...
