Contextual links are best, within the first half of the article and the keyword being contextually meaningful within the article e.g when cooking an egg have the heat set to medium this will prevent the EGG(anchortext) sticking to the frying pan.

Put simply contextual means the word fits
    1. what you are talking about
2.Grammatically suits the sentence it is placed in.

Surround link by relative text, I usually try to add link in first 100 words.

Funny thing happened to me! I placed links on the last paragraph of articles and it worked for me greatly!! Though, the link must be placed within content.

Agreed - contextual still working best for me. My strategy is to include the contextual link in an important sentence. For example - users reading your article will pay more attention to paragraphs that are at the center of answering their query and getting the link in there gets good click - through for me.

It is ok to create links within articel, but another people most people overlook, is that natural links profiles included reference links. References are usually shown after articlesm and they are labeled as references. Pretty much the same as reference links on wikipedia.

I think those kind or reference links can be very powerful as long as they are just a small amount of such links and as long as there is still a considerable part of content between reference links and footer (maybe some suitable media?). If reference links look like a page footer, they would be more or less useless imho.
