How does google analytics or any other stats programme understand that when you go from one page to another that you are the same person and not 2 different people?

    do they use cookies?

and if i opened up a web site in 2 different browser windows would the tracking code treat me as two different visitors or the same person?

They would treat you as the same person if it's the same browser I think.

If you use chrome and firefox simultaneously i think they treat you as two people.

    Code:
    http://code.google.com/apis/analytics/docs/concepts/gaConceptsCookies.html
    <-- and yes, cookies

When i'm online at school I often get multiple entries for using different pc's (All on the same IP). So it might have to do with cookies too?
