I'm in the process of getting a big new site built and have been working with an indian company that's a bit of an industry leader in designing systems for my field.

My ball park figure in my head was a cost of about A$30000, if I got the site designed in Australia.

I've been given a rough costing of US$13500, which is in the ballpark of what I expected to pay.

    Now, my questions.

    1. I do a lot of business with indian customers and they haggle, am I supposed/able to haggle this price or is that not the done thing in professional circles?

    2. Is the figure of $13500 about right for something that would cost 30,000 in the USA?

    3. I'd planned to use escrow to pay, can I get scammed? The largest I've ever sent offshore was about 5K to china, but that was for tangible goods.

    4. If it all does go sour (scammed, poor work etc), as an aussie in Australia what would be my legal recourse?

thanks in advance if you can help

You said you will use Escrow, so I guess this might be Elance (?). If that's the case just keep building the milestones rather than sending one time payment and money is released when work is delivered.

Sometimes I find cheaper/better providers in USA compared to India/Pakistan but it really depends.

A : Depends on the Company. As you said this company is the Industry leader, the possibility of bargaining should be near to zero. But, there's no harm giving a shot ;)

    2. Is the figure of $13500 about right for something that would cost 30,000 in the USA?

A : I think its good enough but make sure you don't compromise on the Quality.

    3. I'd planned to use escrow to pay, can I get scammed? The largest I've ever sent offshore was about 5K to china, but that was for tangible goods.

A : As said above, escrow is pretty much safe but try to breakdown your payment as you might be dealing with them for the first time.

    4. If it all does go sour (scammed, poor work etc), as an aussie in Australia what would be my legal recourse?

A : Sorry, no idea on that!!
