I really like reading Business Insider as their app for android phones is one of the best, and some of their articles never seize to amaze me... especially when they refer to nefarious hackers as "black hats", and the good guys are "white hats" :D

Did give me a pretty good laugh, enjoy it you damned criminals.

Well, all he does is this:
    quote:
All this to say that even though it looked like the bad guy hackers (known as "black hats") were winning in 2014, the white hats still have some tricks of their own.
    Unquote

where, according to him, 'bad guy hackers (known as "black hats")'... I'm Ok with that. :). Hackers can be considered as a further advanced level of Black hat for general public... But all black-hat'ers are NOT hackers. He is only trying to say a partial truth.

If he had said, 'black hats (known as "bad guy hackers")', then he would have called ALL the blackhat'ers as hackers, and would have thus included us ALL (hackers and non-hackers including). For those who never do hacking, they could have a reason to sue him or/and the site too. :)

Some, very few, Blackhat'ers may have the knowledge of hacking, that is entering another computer/site and gain unauthorise access to the data there, but if they are NOT actually doing the hacking part, then they SHOULDN'T be called hackers. They are not doing any crime despite that fact that they could have the entire knowledge of doing that. For another example, "x" knows how to kill someone else with a knife, but that doesn't mean that "x" is a murderer. :). The same way, a blackhat'er may know a lot of things that those moral police don't approve of, but that doesn't mean that the students of Black Hat are criminals...

    ANyway, whatever... :)

:D Google can enter ANY site in the world but they say that they shouldn't be called hackers!!! May be they have a clause somewhere in their ToS that helps them keep themselves clear of legal troubles, but that doesn't give them all the rights to go into any system or any site in the world in the name of cloud storage/computing/indexing/whatever.

Very true. The term's original use is the computer field, not the marketing field.

I remember when I argued with a few BHW users back in the day about the term "black hat" referring to hacking and not marketing. I was looked at like an idiot, too bad it was quite the opposite.

But didn't the term come from American Western Films, where the bad guy wore the black hat while the hero of the film wore a white hat?

Yeah, that was the original definition, then hackers and crackers and now marketing.
Having said that, there are clearly a lot of cowboys in this industry.

Black hat? The only black hat thing here is the name of the forum. We're far from the real black hat things :)

There are some people that do black hat stuff on here, but most people on here are afraid to break the morality of the culture they are from, also too many people on here are afraid of civil suits so they don't get into some of the more black hat stuff.
