Hi everyone, noob here and I've been reading post and other info for a long time and its time to take action.

I have several ideas on setting up an information(niche) site with lots of free content and monetizing it after it has ranked because of its useful content.

My question is specifically is what determines a profitable niche? Or what are the best ways to measure possibility or income?

Maybe some of you guys with experience can enlighten a me, also I have used Market Samuri and I've checked spyfu, are there good places to start?

Google your niches main keywords, and if you see ads on the side, the niche is most likely profitable.

If you have competition, then there is obviously money to be made. If you have ABSOLUTELY no competition, then either you are the first one to arrive and are about to make some good money, or the niche sucks, most likely the latter.

Thank you, this question might get asked a lot. But I don't think it would be smart to just jump into creating something and later find out it was a waist if time and resources.

Exactly. So test the waters with an affiliate product (information based will work if that's what your future site will offer) and you won't have to spend any time creating a product and landing page. If the fishes bite, time to develop. Work $mart.

Find keyword related to your niche and try software like traffictravis or website like semrush and study the serps results.
Use adplanner(adwords tools) to check the monthly search for your keyword and the competivity.
Traffictravis will say to you if it's difficult to rank for your keyword, how many results give google(and bing yahoo) for your keyword and it will give you an analysis of the website which rank in the top 10 for your keyword(like pr, nbr of backlink,pa,da,...).
Semrush will give you the competition with your keyword + it will give you new keyword that your competitor use.
The more the competitor, the more the profit but the more harder to rank 1(sry if it's not english not sure for this sentence).

Absolutely, you can only learn what to do when you know what NOT to do!

Treat it as a gamble and test the waters.

From my own experience I can say that I've always avoided competition. Actually maybe it's wrong said "avoided competition" because competition in IM is everywhere. My point is that depending on your SEO knowledge and investment budget you decide which niche if profitable for you. As an example:

Do you have a budget of 50,000$ and have a strong SEO knowledge? then try the weight loss niche.
You don't have a budget but have some theoretical SEO knowledge? then don't try the weight loss niche because you will fail. or you will succeed...in 1-2 years the minimum. Learn how to use Google Keyword Planner properly and you will find good niches with low competition. Good luck!
