Sorry if this is in the wrong forum, but I wasn't sure where to post it.

I recently created a forum and wanted to ask this community of experts how you all would recommend that I drive real traffic to my forum, encouraging user registrations? Do you have any specific ways that you drive traffic to forums?

Basically it depends on forum niche, you may drive traffic via other relevant forums and share unique and informative content on him to get visitors via search engines.

First, it's hard, but you experienced this already;-)

What you need is a good domain name, catchy, and a niche where peoples are interested in to exchange their stuff, some general blah will not cut that.

Next is a OK hosting, a $2/month won't do you well, or your things go offline if there are a few users at the same time.

Than there is the board software, I'm against the free ones somehow, as they are bad for managment, and forums need a lot of managment, you need to automate as much as possible, or the spam runs you over. My favorite is vbulletin (like this page here), others like xenoforo which is a little bit similar. This investment looks big somehow, but will save you endless hours later.

For the start a simple logo done online for free will be OK, some software offers free themes and you can change the color yourself, add a background and so on.

Than you need starting posts, I recommend postloop, they don't allow adult/shady things, just google for others if you need it for porn, and read their reviews from others.

Like mentioned before, the NICHE is your number one point for success or failure, I'm running some porn-forum, not filesharing, no spam there, and the money/traffic is good, got now about 10k/day uniques, the secret is peoples want to hang out there, so I get registrations and several posts/threads daily, and with vbulletin it's easy to manage.

    For the traffic:
nonadult - make a facebook group additional, even if facebook is your enemy, it can drive traffic there, find other groups in your niche and post, subtile
twitter, get followers in your niche, auto-tweet every few days with halfway usefull things
other forums, related to your niche - post, post, post, don't spam too obvious, easy signature after a few posts
partner up - as example, I got the forum, another guy got a tube with videos in my niche, links are exchanged, very related videos posted get posted on my page, peoples who find his stuff may come to me sooner or later.
search relevant links - not spam, no established forum will exchange just links with you, but some blogger may be interested to have his things on your forum, in exchange you get a link there who gives traffic if you are lucky
build some web2's, thumblers, pinterest, with links back to the forum, relevant, spam that kind of pages wherever you can.
mail your users, not spam, but near to it, so they won't forget you.
There is much more, but this is a start.

clean up regulary, the spam, the dead accounts with zero posts, the trolls

Forums need years to get established, so have luck and patience;-)

Is the $99 signature addition on BHW worth the money if I become active and post in threads related to my niche (assuming I add the forum in my signature)? Or would you recommend me buying someone's signature for use?

You can ask for signature space from members who have account on other forums of your niche.

What if I were to promote my website (which is not a forum, it serves primarily as a guide) but contains a link to my forum?

that's a hard one. It's not easy to start a forum. Sites where you can put something up, and show a friend, can grow easily; like where you can upload a picture or whatever. but to try to create a community out of nothing isnt so easy.

the best strategy is probably just to try to brand a website, and build a community around your brand - the videos you create/blog posts you write. If you can get a traffic base that visits regularly for something other than a forum, its much easier to jump start a forum.

    good luck :)

You need unique content on your forum and you should update content continously. Traffic will come.

Content and LOTS of it. It will take a while but you'll start seeing traffic. Do your keyword research, create some compelling content (same as a website) which will help drive the initial traffic. Use compelling forum post titles to drive CTR and promote discussion. It won't take long to start getting traffic but getting a forum to grow actually requires tons of dedication & hard work which of course is well worth it in the end.
