I am wanting to start and forum, and I am not entirely sure where to begin with it.

Is Vbulletin the best way to go? Can you buy a used license?

i want a forum that will easily be integrated into my site, and it will still look like you are on the same site, I tried phpbb and it makes you feel like your somewhere else.

No forum system is going to look EXACTLY like your site. There will be some styling work involved to make it look like you want it to. PHPBB is free and is very customizable.

I'd go for phpbb, it should last you a good few years (if not more) and is free. Should you ever feel the need to move to VB from phpbb then there is a fairly decent convert script that is available to registered users of VB. I've done it a few times and it's pretty painless.

I'm gonna have to agree with everyone else that phpbb is the way to go. They have a lot of templates and you can start customizing once you have a template you like. Most of the hosting providers will install it for you. Then it's just a matter of getting comfortable with it.

If you are serious with your forum thing and planning to spend some money on promotion etc, then go with VB + VBSEO. Don't compromise on hat and you will appreciate that in long run.
Also give some thoughts to hosting. Normal reseller won't do any good. To start with i think siteground provides specialized hosting for vb. Use some coupon to get discount. I remember paying $40 for my first year.

VBSEO is totally pointless for forums when VB 4.1 and above contain SEO friend URLs anyway, it would just be a waste of money getting it, but Vbulletin is definitely worth it.

Good luck. Your best option is phpbb. It kind of depends on the features you're looking for, but the best overall board is phpbb.

Start a forum with Viagra in the title, and then display CPM ads. That way all the Xrumer and spam bots will count as visitors and you will make some $$ HEHE.

On a more serious note. I think I would stick with an open source solution, if you have some extra $$ you can probably get someone here to help you customize the solution to look like your site. If not you can surely get a freelance person that will help you out.

I've got a phpBB forum and wish I just went and got a Vbulletin license to begin with. Sure its money but more people are familiar with Vbulletin, it has great support, and is easy to work with.

While there's a community for phpBB, customizing it is a pain in the ass, and you gotta do a bunch to make it SEO friendly.

Do it right if your gonna do a forum and get VB.

So how good is this as far as SEO. Did you get a good rank since they were building backlinks. I have seriously thought about putting up a forum or something like that with the intention of drawing SPAM links and then doing something with it, or even using it for linkjuice for other sites.

Vbulletin is the perfect choice if you are going for a professional and high quality forums. They provide 24 hour support. With Many plugins and safety measures. You can find many used liscences on Webmaster forums like Dp, SP and Warrior ;)

    I haven't tried vb 4.1. I am still using vb 3.8.
For vb 3.x, vbseo was great.
If vb 4.x has SEOed URLs and no index for duplicates then no need of vbseo.

vBulletin used to be the best but vB4 is horrible and the layout is hideous in my opinion. I highly recommend checking out XenForo. :)
