I'm looking into building a few niche sites on topics that I am passionate about to make some extra cash. I used the Google Keyword Tool to research one of these topics. The results said that this 2 word phrase had a Competition of "Low", Global Monthly Searches of "60,500", and Local Monthly Searches of "40,500." So, to all the experienced niche site builders/owners out there, how do these numbers sound to you? To me they sound great, but I'm a newbie in regards to niche marketing. It may be relevant to say that I am an experienced web designer/programmer/SEO guy.

Did you search using [Exact] Match Types? If you search using Broad it give you inflated figures.

The 'competition' feature in Adwords describes Adwords advertisers competition - not SEO competition. The numbers look great if you can rank but you'll have to look at the sites on the first page of Google to determine competition properly. Check their page rank and backlinks profile then make your final decision whether to proceed with that keyword or look for a similar alternative.

Ah, I was using Broad. With Exact, the numbers are down to 22,200 and 18,100 respectively.

Thanks Jinko! I'll take that into consideration. I need to look into the competition further.

One thing you want to do... is make sure you search your keywords using the localized proxy and log out of your Google accounts to keep from corrupting your search results. Build a list of the top ranking sites and run them through the keyword tool for the site. You can also analyze them and help your sites in the process. Good luck!

I've looked into a few domains and there seems to be a decent selection. There are only a few names taken that I would potentially want, but I've already found 2 that include the phrase, 1 with a hyphenated domain.

Thanks Jeremonster, upon further analysis, it looks like there aren't any advertisers on Google that advertise for that keyword phrase. I guess I could ad products from Amazon or maybe Ebay, who knows. I obviously have some thinking/planning to do before I decide to proceed.
