Guys this is the problem i got a good domain name from namecheap for 8.81$ and want to make a social networking site. A small one of course. But i am confused on which software to use. i plan to use a open source software. i have some nulled scripts and want to know if they have any bad effect. I want some software that doesnt have their ads and logo on my site. Any recommendations.
Check out buddypress. I think it has some real potential and if it grows like Wordpress then it will be the platform of choice. May not have all the bells and whistles of the paid versions yet, but people are getting interested and there are already a lot of plugins for WPMU which its built on.
You can build using Social Web CMS (socialwebcms.com). It is great script for social networking. Read article in here for more detail how to build in 21 days Code: http://webjackalope.com/how-to-build-and-launch-a-social-news-site-in-21-days/ Hope this helps.
thanks guys for your response. but i was thinking about a site like hi5 and other. I have found some free opensource scripts like elgg, phpizabi. i was wondering anyone has experience with this and lead me to a good direction.
Well I have personally used and had some success with Dolphin. Code: http://www.boonex.com/ However these were very small tightly niched communities. over all the script was easy to install and set up. But it lacked in flexability and was resources heavy. If I was to set up another community site I would use Alicia. Code: http://ww2.phpizabi.net/?L=downloads.index I have a friend who has used it and really likes it. Though there is definitely a learning curve to it. SL
Well if you have decided to make a good sucessful site and spent $8.85 for domain registration why you take chance for script?..Nulled script may touble you laterz...i mean you just can't build good site using free scripts. Get your own script which will cost you around $250 or so i suppose.
@SilverLizard ya dolphin is good but i don't like the design. And about phpizabi i used it and installed without any problem but its shows blank page after install. Anyone know how to fix that. @nextgenseo i don't have that much money now. i was trying for a free alternative for that. and i have the nulled script of the social engine but will get cought if the host providers find out.
I use dolphin for a social site and I like it. As for the blank page goes, Add Code: <?php error_reporting(E_ALL); ini_set('display_errors','On'); ?> at the top of your page. and that will tell you whats wrong. Well in most cases it does.
most any popular open source CMS has the ability to expand into a social network style of site. If i was starting a social network i'de opt for drupal because it's capable of so much even though it has a pretty steep learning curve
dzoic seems nice but its little costly for me. after adding up some plugins like opensocial and branding. it went up to 446$. rignt now i have use phpizapi and it seems good. but they haven't updated the script in like a year or so.
joomla and third party plugins either: community builder or joomsocial would be my choice... theres been plenty said about creating social networking sites already on this site so search around
While not free...I use phpFox for my social network. I started with the nulled versions for testing and eventually paid the $300 price for it. It's a pretty strong script with a good community and decent mods. Version 2.0 is in the works and release candidates will be out shortly. They also have a lease type deal where you pay a monthly fee of I think 30 bucks until you decide to buy the script. I've had very little issues with my network that has grown to a little over 18000 members in a little over a year and a half.
Cant remember which php script that you could buy, but it looked great with great functionality. ELGG isn't the way to go unless you're ready to be pulling the hair from your head when coding for new plugins etc. Used it for one sloppy social networking site and it just can't do the trick really. How you thinking of promoting it? What's your purpose with such a site? People only return if there are hot girls wanting to write about their life like on myspace and faceb00k!
forgot to add look at comuna3 template/theme at http://www.templateplazza.com if thinking of going the joomla route for functionality and layout... jomsocial has got some good plugins being released at the moment which tie into facebook and twitter as well hth
i am using drupal cms. go to the drupal forum section "before you start" Code: http://drupal.org/forum/20
