I signed up for an account a while back and I'm finally poking my head around CJ. But it appears that you can't really use SEO to produce sales. Is this correct? I understand a publisher not wanting to have you ruin his trademark, but how do you target products for a specific publisher? It seems frowned upon. Or am I just being dense?

Before they pay you they ask you how your drive your traffic. They already know but they ask anyways. You can't do anything shady. I know that much.

Thanks, angie1958. I'm not trying to be shady, far from it. I just want to build websites based around specific model or part names for a vendor, or other such terms. But I guess that isn't allowed?

There are plenty of sources of traffic, social media, forums, blogs, videos blah blah blah just tell them what they want to hear. My strategy is I have built a comparison shopping site, I am now ranking it for traffic. They won't care cause of the nature of the site.

Sounds like that would be OK. I was shady. LOL I was getting my traffic from CL. CJ could have banned me sooner but they waited the whole 45 days until payment.

You can promote products using seo, just don't use their trademark name. Lets say you're promoting a tv offer. You don't want to be pushing keywords like directtv, get netflix online, etc. in the serps. Instead go after generic keywords like cheap satellite tv, watch tv online and so on.

Thanks, omnipotent$. I was just hoping to be able to use some trademarks as I find those type of long tail keywords really convert. "Watch tv online" is just a super generic keyword.

That's the point. The advertisers don't want to compete against you. They don't want to pay for advertising to turn around and you get the traffic and then pay you 8% on the sale.

Looking through my analytics I see that alot of my website traffic comes from keywords on the website that relate to the product. Such as "Nike Air Jordans" may be the search term. I don't SEO that. Google picks it up when it indexes.

I would think the idea behind the affiliate traffic is to locate a niche of traffic they haven't though of or don't want to explore, so they pay you to do it for them. You make $5, they make $500. It's a win for them.

Not only CAN you use SEO, it's why affiliate marketing exists. They don't need you to do PPC for them, they don't need you do promote their brand. They want sales.
Sales from sites that produce great content, and say:"Hey, if you like me, and you buy book anyway, why not click through MY Amazon banner?".
Sales from sites that are related to their niche and don't require any maintenance on their part, but would bring quality NEW customers.

Your best bet? Do SEO for the niche, no brand name necessary. Do as much SEO as possible.
