    People do, that´s a fact.

But there are simply too many download sites, download aggregators and mirror sites that if you were to pay every time you had to wait 60seconds to download for free you´d be screwed wouldnt you...

I always thought of this business model as a complete and utter failure. However all of these sites follow basically the same shit, making you wait to pay and cashing in on greed.

Now, wouldn´t you have to be a very impulsive person to pay for a file that is 60 seconds away? And for how many times over?

Are regular internet people that stupid?

    Thanks BHW.

It's a numbers game, Rapidshare hosts so many downloads per day, that there will be that .25% that wants to pay for faster downloading that can still turn a profit.

A high volume free service + shitty convo rates on the paid service = still a lot of bank.

    Yep, like deviatus said.

I got myself the first time a 4 month Rapidshare, when I did some easy CSS work for a friend.

Today I'm still renewing it, as I can download movies 1.4GB in about 15 minutes with full download speed.

But Rapidshare is the only filehoster I would pay, as there's so many stuff that you can download. Just in the last few months they are deleting new releases very fast.

Oh I figured out could be this way as well. Still seemed the worse Idea to start a site like that, lots of investing into hardware to then beg for pennies and still give it away for free the majority of times.

There are just so many of these download sites, it´s hard to believe even the most obscure are earning. Tho, like you described, if planned and executed correctly, can be good bank. Thank you.

I figure Rapidshare has pretty good market share. Them and Mediafire are the two random internet users might be able to name.

But it's an interesting business model. I see it applied to everything, like those free browser games like Evony charging idiots to buy extra game features.

It's 2010, doesn't every company want to make the most money from whatever they offer? They can do that, because they are widely known, just like most companies (cough, apple), when they have a large enough fanbase that when they release something it's an instant hit, whether it's bad or not.

I have a rapidshare and a hotfile account. It's only a few bucks a month if you pay by year. I'd rather get a download when a want it and good speeds, than waste my time looking around.

C0mcast + Download Accelerator Plus = 10-15MB (megabytes not bits) per second speeds on these sites. Movies within minutes and music within seconds.

= Not knowing where to look for it right?

Kidding. If you think of it this way, and pay only to a minority of majors, it is infact a decent deal.

Its just that I cannot conceive cashing in on appealing to waiting times for file downloads. If its a file, it can be copied, it can be found for $0. no hassles, no paying for download.

I mean, the whole system, the waiting times, the "download slots/queue" Are a tremendous bullshit most times.

But again, breaking the rules is only unfair to who sets them...

I have a paid subscription for RS. It's a real time-saver for very little money. Advantages are great with paid RS. Not at all that expensive when you see all those advantages :)

You wont get busted by your ISP either since it is safe to download from filehosts. Bittorrent you may as well try to run naked down the high street and hope CCTV doesn't catch you. Sometimes it does.

I used to pay RS and now I switched to HF.

What you should really be asking is: "why would anyone want to work their butt off uploading files to get a premium account".

The amount of effort to do this far outnumbers the amount of time I used to earn the money needed to pay for the account.

The reason is because they are minors. Basically, minors without bank accounts - this is the only way they can get paid. I guess it is like exploitation and us paying adults and the file hosting company gain at the expense of the copyright owners and the slave minors! :D

It wasn't actually hard...I've been doing it for "fun" for some time now. Rapidshare used to give $$$, then gifts, then points...Either way it was easy to get what you wanted to get the premium account.

Fileserve is the new rapidshare though...the paying one.
