How does a VPS work?

Does it work like a virtual machine that is hosted on another persons server?

Can it have an operating system like windows 7 or xp so it can run programs?

Can I remotely login and access it from any where?

How does a VPS connect to the internet?

Can someone recommend some good vps companies?

Sorry for the noob questions, and thanks for any help you can give

A VPS is the equivalent of a remote computer that you govern from your own. It generally runs inside a virtual machine on the server but that's irrelevant for you, the end user. It can run any operating system (including linux, windows, solaris, whatever else) and it can even act as a VPN or proxy with the right software running. But for the simplest use think of having a remote PC that you can use as your own.

Works like real pc except sound and very low graphics.
Yes it works like virtual machine > you know about it
There are vps providers who offer win7 and a few offer win xp
Yes use RDP
They use datacenter's IP addresses and backbone connection.
There are a few win7 vps provider on bhw too.

Thanks for the info guys.

How does it connect to the internet? (for the purposes of creating an email account, for instance)

you will get 1 or 2 Static ips

so you can not use for multiple email creation.

you will need to use private proxies or scraped public proxies.

There are two types of VPS, windows vps and linux vps. I think you are looking for a windows vps. VPS connects to the internet using its own backbone connection you can remote login to it and access programs. There are many vps providers. When you select please check the features of the packages so you can decide what's the most suitable for you.

How does a VPS work?
a VPS is a "virtual machine" on a dedicated server, its a dedicated server that has been split up into say 5 (more or less depending on provider).

Does it work like a virtual machine that is hosted on another persons server?

yes that is exactly what it is, but it has its own IP allocated to it so you can connect to it remotely.

Can it have an operating system like windows 7 or xp so it can run programs?

yes you can, you can have any OS the hardware allows (best to find a company who offers the OS pre installed)

Can I remotely login and access it from any where?

yes, you will normally be given an IP address, username, and password. all you have to do is plug those details into a remote desktop client and you will have access

How does a VPS connect to the internet?

it connects to the internet via the server it is hosted on (which will be connected via ethernet)

Can someone recommend some good vps companies?

for windows VPS I would say ultravpsbox.com or poweruphosting.com, both have BST thread here on BHW.
but if you don't mind setting everything up your self you can get a dedicated server from OVH.com/us with a higher spec and cheaper than most VPSs

Simply it's a remote computer running on the VPS provider's location.

Can it have an operating system like windows 7 or xp so it can run programs?
Most of the time these systems are intended to work as servers(eg. hosting), so they are powered by server optimized OS like windows 2003/2008 server OS. Some do provide windows xp/7 as VPS but are not very common.

Can I remotely login and access it from any where?
You can remotely login to VPS using applications like "Remote Desktop Connection"(default windows RDP client) and access them like a local computer

How does a VPS connect to the internet?
VPS should have a public IP for connectivity and the client(Remote Desktop Connection) will use RDP (Remote Desktop Protocol) to send and receive the data over the internet.
