Hey guys, recently I purchased a VPS with the intention of hosting my new project. I've been reading that when it comes to ranking in google, a dedicated IP is better than sharing one (shared web hosting) Is this true? The VPS is also extremely hard to setup, so I was wondering if I should just did it and get shared hosting, like HG or something...

    Cheers

I used to use a reseller hosting, but my project used too much resources. So i had to move onto a VPS. They are hard to setup, if you don´t know what you are doing. But Google is your friend. I found all the help i needed to setup my VPS from scratch.

Well, Vps server is a need when you have a succesful project with some traffic, but it gives more adavantatges for SEO

For example if you have a Shared hosting you usually share the same server with tons of people...and there could be several problems.

    1) bad neighbors: search for a hosting with strong policy about content: no porn, no violence,no warez..etc. Bad sites in a same server could hurt your SERP.

    2) Velocity: One of the values that Google watch is the load time of your site, shared hosting usually are slower that VPS, so they give less value. Some people reports that they rank improves when chango to a VPS or dedicated.

VPS gives some advantatges...but as you say is more complicated and more expensive

First off as long as you are hosting with a reputable company your IP is not going to make any difference in how well you rank. NONE!!!

Now a vps can help because chances are your site will run better when it is not sharing resources with 1000's of other sites but that has nothing to do with the IP.

If your vps is hard to setup then you are with the wrong company. You can find fully managed ones that are setup exactly like a regular reseller account except you have access to more functions in your whm.

Don't buy a managed VPS, too much extra. Get one from AlienLayer, I like them, and they have a coupon on their twitter where you can get the 2.5GB ram 2tb VPS for 15 a month. But since you already have one, I've set so many up I'd be happy to set it up for you for free. I'll put Virtualmin on it since it's very easy to deal with. Or if you need cPanel I could do that for you.

Yeah they are a pain in the ass, but I actually am pretty knowledgeable in the area of Linux.

Thanks for your post, do you suggest any good web hosting suppliers that have such strict polices so their users get a fair service?

It’s hard cause I have no cPannel, I’m doing EVERYTHING manually :p

Yeahh, mines unmanaged… I gotta make some money first, before I decide to get a ‘proper setup’

Totally misleading. Even though the site load time seema a bit reasonable, It is not related with this subject. I may say that nearly every word here is somewhat wrong.

Then people would buy dedicated to rank #1 like crazy.

OP, install kloxo. If you know unix (you say so), nothing should be hard for you. Kloxo will be your best friend and you will love it. It even works on 64MB systems. So it does not consume vps resources like cpanel.

Just get an unmanaged and put kloxo on it. It mimics cpanel very well.

Yup at $5 per month they have to oversell as hell just to break even. The math does not work out at all so in the end someone has to pay the price so be it customer or the host (recent example W2servers)

Do you use on Kloxo to manage an entire pool of VPS'es, or do you have one Kloxo per VPS?

Not so good at managing a pool of VPSs. I mean I do not know how to do that. Just using it on a single VPS installation.
