I want to start using some BH tools but a little worried about some of the sites these tools target (virus/maleware etc ...)
I read in another thread that i should use VMware? do you agree?

If yes, can you just explain what VMware is? as i understand it, its a version of my OS that runs within my main OS? so that if i run any BH tools and get spanked with a virus/maleware it only effects the OS system im running in VMware?
    Correct?

If yes, Im running windows 7 64bit.
Is VMware free? can anyone advise me which version i should download?
And once installed how do i install a copy of windows into it? or does the install of VMware do this for me from my main OS?

Definitely worth using a virtual machine whenever you have to test something, especially if downloaded off a questionable source: it will add an extra layer of security between the virtualized environment and your real machine. In order to accomplish this you can either use VMWare Workstation or VirtualBOX as already suggested, I generally go with VirtualBox these days because I mainly run on it on unix systems and most im apps are designed for windoze... A less drastic approach might be a "sandboxing" program like "sandboxie". While lighter and ready to run almost as soon as you're done installing it (unlike a virtual machine that emulates the entire hw -> you need to install windows on it) it can't guarantee the level of security of VMWare or VirtualBox or Parallels if you are running on a Mac.. It has its place to run independent browser sessions for instance, even if these days incognito/private modes are generally more than enough to pull it off... As soon as you disable that cancer called flash, of course ;) HTH

Use Kaspersky. I use it and have not had a problem.
