I just started to wonder does visual appearance of a website affect Google rankings?

I'm aware the indirect effect from better user behavior metrics with better designed website, but how about just direct effect from visually beautiful website design? Can Google 'see' your website and if yes, does it matter when it comes to rankings?

not directly, but user engagement might be a ranking factor, known as bounce rate, but it's more about content rather than design.

Your website design will influence the time users will spend on your site, so indirectly web design will influence your bounce rate.

Yes and yes, as mentioned in OP, I'm well aware of the indirect effect. I would be interested in direct effect if there's one.

visually website design does not affect Google rankings, but Google can value how good your site is by how correct code your site have (nowadays that factor is less and less important). So you can check your website for any errors and warnings in your html code here > https://validator.w3.org/

No it doesn't and don't bother working on it until your site appears on the first page of the serps.

Google can not read and determine how nice your website looks. It is a machine.

Not a factor. Period. Site can be ugly as sin, as long as it has the links and bounce rates Google wants it will rank.
