Hi guys, could you please advise - what is the easy and 100% reliable method to check if the software I am about to download has a virus or malware?

    tx.

    http://www.virustotal.com/
    Is popular here.

But nothing is 100% secure. The uploader could have custom-coded the virus for all we know.

And sometimes the scanners take their time to catch up.

In the Download section the mods are constantly on the lookout for reports by members with updated virus scans.

A file may look clean when shared, but can show warnings when scanned again later.

If you want 100% security (and have some time), you could run your software on a virtual box (e.g. http://www.virtualbox.org/).

Yep...it would...viruses or trojans spread by an antivirus proggy or a firewall.

Even more if it's Kapersky or NOD because they're the best and everyone wants them for free.

    What was I thinking....

Pretty much what everyone has said here! Use virustotal to scan and the run it sandboxed.

Maybe I'm mistaken but downloading the file is not what gives you the virus right? It's when you open it or run it or something. I always download, scan the zip with a couple programs, unzip it, scan it again, then re-scan any exe.files in it. Not sure if makes any difference but I do it anyway.

You could also use Jotti for anything under a couple MB, but yeah, people say that running it in a virtual box gives them best results. It sucks if you use the virtual box for other things such as like, banking, but you shouldn't really mix the two.

So, for virtual box, I need to buy an additional licence for Windows, right? because with Linux the test will make no sense anyways...
    or what do you suggest?

This is not directly related to scanning for download, however I think I might be able to get some assistance. I had the JL-Illredir virus one of my add on sites as well as my primary domain. Had to have my whole domain reset. I was told that I could get this virus by my ftp program.

Is there something I can do or us a anti virus program, beside to periodically back up my site, to check for viruss on my server?
