I have a very interesting ranking/traffic problem. I currently have a blog ranking in the middle of the third page (SERP) for a 200k exact search term (both local and global). If you isolate just USA it comes out to 150-ish k (local monthly search). The term is very popular and is not dependant on seasonality or anything like that.

I have webmaster tools enabled and i am barely getting any impressions. And there is barely any traffic coming in.

The site is ranking i have checked it from many different places and webmaster tools is also showing the correct average position for the term.

The only thing I can think of is that people do not get to the third page that much. The problem with that theory is that I have had in the past other sites on the same position that get plenty of impression and traffic.

Simple, third page doesn't pull traffic.

I had a term with VERY similar stats, and didn't get any traffic until I hit #8-9, especially due to some authorities up there. By the time I hit #2, I was getting smashed with traffic and sales.

Just keep working at increasing your ranking, it'll pay off mate.

You kinda answered your own question.

Every niche will be different - If page 1 is full of websites with useful information and low bounce rates then you are going to be getting less people going to page 2.

I have a few sites that sit on page 3 and get practically 0 traffic from it.. most people don't go pass the first page before searching a different variation of the term, let alone page 3.

Keep on working on the site and moving in rank if you want to see any traffic.

You pretty much answered your own question.

I pretty sure this is not a theory. Pretty much fact. Unless Google's SERPs are really bad and irrelevant, you aren't going to see much if any traffic on the third page. You may as well be on page 30.

It's unfortunate, as you essentially don't see revenue until you hit Page One. You could be 11, or #999, it's all useless really until you hit Page One. Just keep chipping away, the positive thing is you've made it to page three, depending on the niche, you could only be a short wait away from hitting some serious traffic ;)

You gotta think, when was the last time you went to page 3 searching for something other than your own website? Probably never. Hence why you're not getting any traffic. And worse still, you might get very little even in position 5. Good luck!

That means the sites in top 10 are good if enough for searchers to don't go on 2nd page,i would recommend to keep linkbuilding, and make sure your site is well optimized for that keyword, and if somebody arrives on third page make sure he will choose your website....this way you will climb in 2nd page and so on.
