Most of my sites are Adult, but the strategies for ranking an adult site is practically the same as mainstream, so I wanted to share something that I have observed from my sites

First of all, it is important to note that these observations only apply AFTER Penguin. Before Penguin, my link building had an OPPOSITE effect.

I use Linkspun.com to create free A:B:C trades for my sites and build backlinks on related websites.

My sites are pornstar blogs and the URL is the first and last name of the pornstar. For example, a blog dedicated to Eva Notty at evanotty.net

Before penguin, 90% of my sites ranked on Page 1 of Google; many in the Top 3 positions for the girl's name.

Since Penguin, maybe less than half of them rank on Page 1.

Here are SOME of the sites that currently rank on Page 1, with the # of niche related backlinks via linkspun.com next to them:

    1. Carly Parker - #3 on Google - 0 links
    2. Carmen Croft - #4 on Google - 8 links (Includes PR2, PR1, PR0)
    3. Dona Bell - #2 on Google - 3 links (Includes PR1, PR0)
    4. Helen Cielo - #1 on Google - 0 links
    5. Lacie James - #2 on Google - 0 links
    6. Marie Lambo - #2 on Google - 0 links
    7. Penelope Piper - #5 on Google - 0 links

Here are SOME of the sites that rank low or do not rank on Google, with # of niche related backlinks via linkspun next to them:

    1. Alexis Amore - Unknown rank - 22 links (Includes PR2, PR1)
    2. Eva Notty - Unknown rank - 23 links (Includes PR2, PR1, PR0)
    3. Jasmine Black - Unknown rank - 30 links (Includes PR1)
    4. Satinee Capona - Page 4 on Google - 6 links (Includes PR2, PR1)
    5. Sensual Jane - Page 4 on Google - 3 links (Includes PR2)
    6. Sharon Pink - Unknown rank - 9 links (Includes PR2, PR1)
    7. Venera - Page 4 on Google - 15 links (Includes PR1)

Notice how many links I have built for #1, #2, and #3. There are more links on higher authority sites actually, but most of my links are built via linkspun.

Some people might say that the link quality is poor, and that may be true, although they are all niche related.

But it is just worth noting that sites #1, #2, and #3 all held the #1 spot on Google at some point before Penguin

And maybe something that you all can consider before you try to build "as many links as possible" like I once did. Go for the quality links only...

Also, notice how some of the sites in the first group rank on page 1 without any links at all! All sites in both groups are created with hand-written unique content, low keyword density, and good # of text per post, so perhaps this really does show that Google is looking for these things more so than links, since it did not take any links (except for a few authority backlinks and links within their own network) to get nice rankings on those.

I hope you all can find these results useful and perhaps learn from some of my mistakes ;)

Great information. This just proves that the latest Google updates focused more on quality and not on quantity. :)

Excellent post! Do you think competition or the lack there of is an additional factor. I'm not familiar with these people so could the folks who are still ranking well be less popular than some of the stars whose rankings have fallen? I'd be very interested to know how you feel this might impact their rankings. Thanks again!

That's a very good question and important point that I took in to consideration as well. Both groups have names that are more or less popular. Jasmine Black is probably the most popular name in either list, and this is the only blog that I was never able to rank above page 2 even before Penguin. But there are also relatively popular names in group #1 that rank well with fewer back links.

Also keep in mind that many of the sites in Group #2 that are not ranking, really DID benefit a lot from backlinks before Penguin. Alexis Amore and Eva Notty held the #1 spot on Google for several months before Penguin and those are also very popular stars.

Finally, I would reiterate that all sites DO have backlinks. Of the sites in Group #1, they do have back links on different IP addresses within my own network and they are linked on authority sites like Freeones, but the additional links on little blogs here and there do NOT help me any longer.

So in the end, these results might just remind a lot of you of what you already knew:

Back links are still good since Penguin, but perhaps we should only focus on higher quality links, because the common blog links seem to have done more harm than benefit in this particular example.

They're overused so it's less powerful. It still increase rank but just a little bit.

Did not use linkspun on the first group unless indicated. Linkspun = mainly hard links on other related blogs

And Linkspun is the primary tool I used in the past to build links, and is almost all links on blogs.

When I say that the first group still has links outside of linkspun, I'm referring to only a few other links on high quality "babe index" sites like Freeones, Barelist, Babepedia, so I've learned that 5 high quality links is better than 20 low quality links (even if there is a few HQ links in that 20). I also link the blogs within my own pornstar blog network to each other, since they have limited outgoing links on each site these are probably good as well.

One of the issues with linkspun is that so many people use it, so it's hard to find sites on linkspun that are not saturated with outbound links. But the same thing is true for a lot of mainstream blogs that people place links on; they just have too many outbound links, so I felt it was worth sharing these results for everyone. Maybe after Penguin Google has started to penalize for these sorts of links more than before, because there are just too many links regardless of whether the blog is closely related to niche

To answer your question, I have become numb to porn. I think other adult webmasters would tell you the same!

Anyway, I think most of us now know that quality matters most.

But for me the question has become "What IS a quality link?"

Interestingly enough since this thread was posted I used linkspun to get two PR3 links to one of my blogs and it went up on Page 1 of Google today (#6 position). PR1-2 have not had the same benefit for me... but perhaps PR3+ with low outbound can be considered "quality"

I don't know... I'm still learning from experience here

Interesting stuff. I've just got a PR7 link for one of my adult dating sites and hoping to see a jump in the serps too.
