My main site has A LOT of exact anchor text links for the keywords I was targetting. The site used to be ranked near the top for some very competitive keywords. These links were generated over a period of 5 years or so, and the majority are exactly the keyword I was targeting (with one in particular having more than half of the total incoming links).

Now, after the latest Google updates I've lost nearly all of those rankings. Initially I just waited it out and hoped they'd come back... they never did.

So my question is, if you have an authority site like this and believe the reason for your drop in rankings to be link diversity, what would you do to improve the situation. What kind of links would you try to get, and what kind of anchor text would you use ?

I want to try to get back the rankings I had before, but I'm hesitant that just blasting a bunch of irrelevant 'click here' or a naked URL will actually be worth the effort. Anyone have any positive experience with improving a site like this ?

You are going to find that this is precisely what google is looking for now, link diversity. So starting to create other links with generic terms and longer versions of your main keywords and also other related keywords.

Mix up keyword anchors, plain URLs (just text, no link), and hyper linked URLs in every type of backlink you can. That's what works best ;)

It will take some time, but it's worth it.

One of my main keywords has a ridiculously high anchor text for one keyword (about 85% of all links). That keyword is ranked #1.

    DesignEx,

When doing a backlink building campaign, your number one goal should be to make it look natural. It is still worthwhile to go after backlinks but if all or most have the same text you will eventually get nailed. From google's standpoint, they don't want any manipulation of links even if it could be considered reputable. If you can make it look natural though, there is really no way they can tell the difference.

Look at it from the stand point of some other web master putting a link to your site on theirs. They probably aren't' thinking "oh I'll use this particular keyword because they are probably trying to rank for that". They probably aren't thinking at all and just place a link where it seems to make sense with whatever anchor text comes to mind.

Maybe you can find some ideas here,

    Good luck,
