Do expired or deleted domains with good backlink profiles have value if they have been already deindexed by Google? (By deindexed I mean the index now shows the single page of domain having expired, not a completely empty result set that might indicate a penalty) Do they regain the authority and link juice passing power if they are re-registered and content added?

Or should we be aiming to purchase expired domains that are still indexed?

Do you have any input based on personal experience?

Better to buy an old domain with good in metrics and backlinks. When you redirect to your money site, will help to increase in traffic. I am not sure that the already deindexed domain will help to your money site right now.

Check the metrics of old site before you buy it.;)

Some expired domains are not really indexed but that doesn’t mean that they are all bad or hit by a penalty. Indexed or not, just make sure to check if they have decent backlinks then check the history of the domain in archive if they were abused previously.

Those domains can still have value if they actually got a lot of traffic when they were alive.

There might still be some straggler traffic and if they are targeted enough, they might yield a positive ROI.

Of course, this is all speculative.

You have to analyze each de-indexed and banned domain on a case by case basis.

Don't think that just because an expired domain was de-indexed or penalized, that it is automatically worthless.

While there is a 99-percent chance that it would be garbage, there is still that small possibility that it actually will be able to drive enough organic traffic on its own, that it may be worth picking up.

Now, keep in mind that by organic traffic I'm talking about traffic from social media sites and other non-search engine sources.

I've never had any issues getting expired domains indexed. Honestly I don't even check anymore whether or not a domain is still indexed. Just make sure you look up its history in Wayback Machine (archive). If it ever became some weird webshop out of nowhere or got redirected to some 'casino' website or something don't even bother picking it up. You're also gonna want to check the backlinkprofile for foreign achortexts and strange anchor percentages.

Before buying look for the domains that should not contain any spammy links, where as its a best idea you can buy expired domain with existing back links.
Make sure that changing the content with high quality and quantity that are related to your niche.

I thought the only important thing with PBNs was that they had good backlinks and weren't abused in the past. I didn't know they also had to be indexed still, damn...

They don't have to be indexed at all, as a matter of fact most of the expired domains you'll find will be deindexed, there is no reason for Google to keep an expired domain in the serps, as soon Google finds that he content is gone it will be taken out of the index for the obvious reasons, just do your research before you buy an expired domain, and even if you do all the research in the world you still will end up buying a banned domain, it is the cost of doing business.
