The new proposed .UK domain being released by Nominet could potentially be negative for .co.uk domains. Will this new domain replace .co.uk as the uk standard. And registration prices will be higher at least £20 a year. This will also eradicate drop catchers as I imagine it will go the way of the u.s where valuable domains are not allowed to drop and go to auction instead.

In fact I have just received this email from a dropcatcher/domainer.

"We are currently having a sale clearance on .UK domain names we have for sale. The current updated list is 2153 domain names and the price is any one name for 50 pounds or any 3 names for 100 pounds. To view the list of domain names please goto URL"

So it appears the mass selling has already started.

Watch as co.uk domains drop in value rapidly... As the market is
    flooded.

I don't think these domains will be as easy to acquire as .co.uks. The system is going to be run more like the Irish or Australian system where you have to prove residency and a business interest in the name. I think anyone with a legitimate business in the uk that already has the .co.uk should have first dabs on the .uk

Either way .co.uk is an established URL and thousands of companies have invested heavily in branding etc it's not going to disappear in a hurry.

Domain companies would of course spread the fear but they have a vested interest and we have all heard the hype about new domains before.

I agree the domains wont disappear but the new TLDS are likely to dilute resale values dramatically.

I think .COM domains are your safest bet.

The domain industry regulators are clearly establishing a racket, and should be investigated for monopolizing the shit out of this. ICANN, along with the others, are a joke.

They're continuously increasing fees when registering domains...for what? Stop Squatters? By increasing it like $.30? Increase domains across the board to $50 then we can start talking about there being an incentive to reduce squatting by increasing price. Until then, it's just the gradual bullshit we see with taxes and every other sort of fee that starts small and incrementally gets larger to support the bureacracy developed behind it.

This is all so predictable it's nauseating at the lack of creativity. There is absolutely no benefit coming from these increasing fees, and worse they're being used to fund these people to lobby for bullshit like this.

.uk should be given to everyone who registered .co.uk. To have people buy them is fucking extortion and at that price is a clear demonstration over the lack of market oversight these people have. They can set basically any price they want, and with pretty much no competition, nothing can be done.

I hope and pray that more people find ways to straight up bootleg register domains and offer that service. I'd love to see every single 5 to 10 character domain "registered". The domain industry is ruining the internet.

Furthermore, if the US claims it has jurisdiction over .coms, then it needs to get the hell rid of .us or make a transfer between the two or give owners of .coms the .us extension of the domain, or create a new .co.us and give that to .com owners. This is so asinine.

Want to a bright career opportunity kids? Become a lobbyist for the domain industry. The price of registering domains can only go up, and with your help, together, we can make sure that we make starting websites as difficult as it is to open a brick-and-mortar store. Yay.
