How much more valuable is a backlink from an .edu/.gov site versus a .com site.

I know there is a difference, just don't know exactly how much.

In my experience, I haven't seen much of a difference in their effect on SERP. A lot of edu and government sites have good PR, so people might think they have more effective backlinks because of that.

in theory 1 edu=20 normal BLs. But will you work only on creating EDU BLs?
There is no point trying to get only EDU backlinks, get some good high PR BLS + EDU

That would be more effective, spread it out mate :)

    .EDU, how i hate thee!

if you create a profile on an EDU site.. you have PR 0 or unranked... aka sucks.
if you comment on an EDU blog... even if it's ****************.. you'll notice 600+ more guys commented there... and guess what? .edu blog ->> 600 outgoing links to various site... looks like link farm.

    yes, it sucks.

try to get some edu blogs with under 100 comments... and if they don't allow website field.. try to sign in the text of the comment as

    Kindest regards,
    Alex
    www.site.com

    anyway, hoped that work.

oh, wait. =) one more thing.

    site:.edu inurl:CreateUser.aspx
    site:.edu inurl:register.aspx
    site:.edu inurl:"wp-signup.php"
    site:.edu inurl:register.php "agree"
    site:.edu "powered by expressionengine"
    site:.edu "powered by vbulletin" inurl:"register.php"
    site:.edu "powered by SMF" inurl:register
    site:.edu "powered by drupal" inurl:"register"
    site:.edu "powered by punbb"
    site:.edu "powered by phpbb"
site:.edu inurl:blog "post a comment" -"comments closed" -"you must be logged
    in"

    let's analyze this last one

site:.edu inurl:blog "post a comment" -"comments closed" -"you must be logged
    in"

we need all sites with .edu extension....
that have BLOG in the URL
that have 'post a comment" in the body
that DON'T HAVE "comments are closed" or "you must be logged in to comment" anywhere on the page.

    I hope that helped...

    anyway, use your creativity

site:.EXTENSION inurl:BLOG/FORUM/KEYWORD MAYBE "WHAT TO HAVE ON THE PAGE" -"WHAT NOT TO HAVE" "KEYWORD" ... make a list on excel and enjoy link building.

    bye. =(
