Had a quick question and needed some input on this lol. Naturally i know nobody will be able to tell me if this will work or not but i figured some initial input couldnt hurt lol.

I've been thinking about setting up a white hat website that will only advertise restaurants/activities in the city that i live in since this is such a huge vacationing spot (has been advertised on tv as one of the best top 10 vacation spots in the U.S.). My initial plan is to setup the website and start driving some traffic to it and once i hit a good and steady amount of traffic start sending out letters to local businesses about advertising space for $xx amount per month.

Now i did a quick google search for my keywords and the results range around 140k search results.. anybody got any input on how difficult it would be for me to reach page 1 with google?

I mean i am not even sure if places would go for such a deal.. getting a website seems so easy to me now a days that its weird for me to think about that anybody still would pay for advertising like that :p

I would really appreciate any input on the topic

if you only have 140 k it would not be all that hard to get to the first page. Have the right keywords, content, set up a sitemap and a few good back link. This is the ground work to getting your site to where you want to be.

getting people to advertise is easy if you can show that you have traffic coming to your site organic that is.

    hope this helps

    Use any niche analyser tool...

Try out some SEO plugins for FireFox, and try to take a look on the first page sites... see if they have their SEO Worked, the Backlinks they got, and on and on...

If you see week competition in the first page, most probably you get your page indexed with a nice SEO work...

    Edit:

The number of sites in the competition, doesn't mean the quality of the competition.

Ok, try to check their SEO Scores, in any good Score site... (Sorry, but I just have this sites in my language)

After that, use the Google Keyword Tool, to have an ideia of the number of searchs per mounth, if the number is not too low, or not too high.

You can perfecly work your site to be in the first position, but you have to calculate the work and the benefits...

Hmm :) thanks for all the input guys! Check my main competition and i came up with a few facts:
-Domain has been registered for 14 years (could this be a problem? lol)
    -Google pr 5
    -176 backlinks

Roughly around 3k roughly searches for my keywords

See if they have the keywords in the Title Tag, in the URL main site URL or Description.

If they have, most wise option is to find a new keyword... if they dont, with a good niche domain and optimization, and time, you can sure beat it... but for just 3K mounth...

You have to think if this 3k mounth are really potential clients...

I think imma go for it as a little side project and see how many hits i can reach per month lol.
If i can get around 1k uniques per month i am going to write up a letter and send it out to the thousands of local shops around here and just tell them i will charge $30 initially to put up their ad and then $20 per month or so.. its cheap traffic for them and i let them put a online coupon on their so they can track their traffic in store lol.

let us know how it goes. I've had similar ideas but your town seems a shoo-in for a site like that. If you don't do it, someone else probably will. And if someone already is, yours can be better.
