    Hey guys,

Just wondering what the consensus is on using wordpress tags on a wordpress site/blog.

I've always just used categories, and not really bothered using tags. I've read some guides on here probably around 2 years ago saying to not use tags as it causes over-optimisation of keywords, keyword stuffing. Not to use tag clouds because it sends site wide link juice to tag pages, diluting other pages.

Whenever I see a tag cloud or tag list in a sidebar/widget I automatically think it looks spammy, and never actually click any of the links.

Im just wondering what the consensus is on using wordpress tags - why/when you would use them. Or why you shouldn't / don't use them.

    Thanks

Tags are essential. You should certainly make use of them. Also, why are you worrying about tag clouds? They can be hidden, anyway.

A general good practice is to keep the keyword density low. whether you use tags/tag clouds is entirely upto you.
Tag clouds are generally used in blog posts as they help not just in SERP rankings but inter blog searches as well.
If you have a more professional website (not blogging oriented) then you may choose to avoid.(this is purely based on general practice and aesthetic considerations)
    Hope this helps.
    Cheers!

    How are they essential???

Anyway, OP, I'd suggest not using them based on exactly what you said.

1.) They increase keyword density, on each and every page they appear on.
2.) It makes your internal link structure void, i.e, dilutes "link juice".

It is OK to use tags for a WordPress blog, but only for relevant words. That way you won't overstuff your blog post with keywords and you can always choose not to put up a tags cloud. I agree, it doesn't look very professional.

Tags also improve user experience as they give easy navigation to users and they can go directly to what they are looking for.
