So I figured if I'm going to be selling SEO/PPC consulting services to online marketing agencies and end user clients than I should be able to make money from it myself.

Now we alll know some businesses fit organic/paid search better than others. What I wanted to find out was if SEO and SEM services fit that criteria. If you used adwords or rank organically for your market who are the folks who call you mostly? Do you convert a decent portion of these individuals.

I am thinking about going after some long tail keywords which are related to SEO/PPC that are cheap but they may also bring in tire kickers.

Any insight from those with experience is greatly appreciated

    Thanks

PPC is effective, in particular AdWords, but there is a lot of competition so CPCs can get really pricey fast and most IM terms are already in excess of $10/click. In my experience organic rankings are much more effective at bringing clients in, but there's a lot of costs involved in ranking for those types of terms as you're up against all experts.

I have found that the best way to attempt to gain clients for SEO and SEM services is to simply cold call. Check out some yellow page sites and look at some niches like a/c repair , landscaping, etc or whatever niche you are targeting. The paid sponsored ads are companies that are actively involved in IM and would be a good contact for you to call and offer your services.

I have seen success in that and also hiring 3P providers to handle the sales call. You would have to generate a good selling script and have them implement that into the call. I have also found that sending them a nice sales letter to their physical address also get clients.

    Good Luck.

Its very saturated. CPC is really high, tried it before. You can do good if you have some good capital to spend up front. Lots of competition. I agree with The Demon getting organic is the way to go, a much better lead. Thats what i have been doing and it has been successful for me.

Yeah estimated CPC for the most obvious keyword in my area is 15$ and it looks like theres about 15 companies bidding on the keyword.

    Might be tough to justify

For me if I was just starting.

Go To Craigslist and answer all the Seo Requests until you get 2-3 clients
only use major cities where they are looking at actually paying something.

Then once you get some results - go to all local businesses showing them where
they rank now and where they could rank using your services and charge a premium.

Will take 6-9 months to build up portfolio and new clients - but it works.

    Cheers

    Thanks for the insight guys.

Also is anyone focusing on companies selling B2B?

One of my competitors is selling service to companies selling B2B solutions. Their search volume for their key phrases is much lower but one sale could equal 50K so you only need to one deal a year to more than justify your cost.

LMAO, why not just phone up a cable company and advertise for a busy slot? Or go into movie theaters and find out numbers to call. You might even generate quite a few calls for your local area if you can refer them to some success stories. How? Go build up a clientele base or rank your own sites in tough niches. Then go study Mind Control Marketing (available) in the download section of BHW. Think outside the bounds of the idiotic methods we see repeatedly rinsed over and over. You can even follow Perry Marshals advice and do a max cpc click to determine what position you are going to be in, and set your daily budget to control costs. Technically for SEO expect about 1% (tops) conversion rate for global traffic.

    SEO 803,000 searches monthly
317,185 will click on ads (39.5%) according to Google
179209-179210 will click on the top ad (56.5%) according to Google
1792 will convert into sales or leads every month

Is it worth it to sell SEO? Yes, you need to be going for big clients. WHY? $2,014,309.16 cost divided over 1792 sales is $1124.06 per lead with the current data from Google. Your SEO package has to be ultra top quality to go that route. I have gotten into PPC and Adwords Optimization and the field for SEO has the most invalid clicks for noobs I have ever seen. I had to literally block all major and sub major proxies, countries where I thought some buyers would actually be, and many other things. So was it worth it? Pocket change made was $45,000 profit after a campaign ended. Was my budget as big as listed? Nope, was a few hundred k, but ultimately if you can find a better source of traffic then by all means go for it.
