Google themselves say that keyword meta tag is 100% irrelevant and has been dropped off the ranking factors list, in this post. Is that totally true, are they trying to mislead us or has this changed? As someone earlier mentioned that Matt Cutts likes to tell lies... And how come the all-in-one SEO plugins for WP are still using those meta tags?

Using that tag, you are making it easier for the competitors to figure out the keywords you are ranking for.

I'm sure it's true for the most part.

As for the Wordpress bit, I don't see why MC saying that would lead to every SEO plugin changing their setup. People might want to use the tag for different reasons. Some people may not believe him at all anyway.

I love when my competition puts their keywords in meta tags, it makes scraping the keywords they're using so much simpler.

It's irrelevant because they were getting stuffed with keywords and skewing the results so badly that Google threw their hands in the air and said "awww nawwww"

? AIOSEO doesn't force you to put keywords in metatags, but it's still a feature because, if you haven't noticed, not too many people have figured out SEO and most minds are stuck in 2006. You can disable adding the keywords

in October of last year Bing has confirmed that they still look at the meta keywords tag when crawling sites but instead of using the information as a ranking signal, the search engine uses it as a way of detecting spam.

Bing is advising that sites using Meta Keywords don?t need to remove the tag so long as it is following best practices - dont spam the shit out of your keywords, keep it under 10 etc.

Just thought I would tell people who haven't read about this. I personally still use them, why? no idea.. How I was trained and I like to be du diligent and cross my t's and dot my i's.

Also it can save a lot of headache, I have worked on clients sites and the first thing they do is ask why I didn't put any keywords in the meta tag. Then I have to explain to them that it doesn't help anymore and they think im full of crap.

I know it's irrelevant for Google, but I always put 3 or 4 keywords in there.
There are still lots of meta search engines, directories and appaisal/whois/info websites crawling/using this information. So I think it might still be useful.
