I've always wondered is it allowed to use images from the mainstream media such as CBS, CNN, FOX, etc on your own news site? If you credit the images that is.

One site that does this with almost all of their news articles is LibertyWriters. They are a huge pro-Trump sensationalist news site, very similar to the ones that popped up during the 2016 US election that uses images from FOX, CNN, NBC as the cover image for a lot of their articles. They also tend to edit their article images too.

The image source is always mentioned, but my question here is: How are LibertyWriters doing this? I always thought that mainstream media images couldn't be used on a monetized site, even when the image is credited? Or are they licensing their image rights by paying the big media sites?

Can someone who knows about this explain it to me. Thank you.

So they have a license with all the news sites that allows them to use their images? I wasn't aware of that option.

They could have an arrangement, or they are using rss. The BBC doesn't allow rss on commercial sites, don't know about CNN etc

What would happen if I went on youtube videos produced by big media companies, and took a screenshot at a random time and uploaded that screenshot on a monetized news site? Could I get a DMCA for that? Would they go after me if I have a lot of articles with similar screenshots like that?

If you're embedding the videos then that's ok, I do it and use a plugin that automatically posts an image from the vid

Is it okay to embed videos produced by big news companies in articles on your monetized WordPress site?

Yes, if they allow vids to be embedded, they show exactly as on youtube . No different to the share button

So if you embed a video in the article, you can grab a screenshot from the actual video, and use it as the article cover image, without worrying about DMCA?

I'm just worried about the copyright legality behind doing that. I don't want to run into copyright issues down the line.

What plugin is it that you use?

If you follow what @blogzandstuff posted then you should be OK as you should be able to use the image under Fair Use
