Im not sure if I am making any sense, but I am thinking of purchasing a few exact match domains that I cannot rank my mainsite for, and see if I cant rank the new site.

I was thinking though only putting a few pages up on the new site, and using my main sites header with the mainsites links.

Is this a recipe for disaster?

Generally I wouldn't recommend this because an old site will almost always have a better chance to rank than a new site, even if it's an EMD. If you're set on doing a new site, I would at least go the route of buying an aged (8+ years) domain and getting that to rank for the term. The URL of the old site doesn't even matter.

As nice as it would be to be able to pick up 8+ year old domains at the drop of a hat, yes EMD domains pointing to the main site are OK. I would go as far as to host them on the same server. Transparency in this case is probably for the best.

Provided the separate domains actually have a unique purpose, eg promote separate services available from the main site, you should be OK - source: i run the marketing for a bed manufacturer and have a number of EMD's that offer promotions on their particular products. They are all on the same server, link to the main site and have their own facebook and twitter campaigns, and all feature highly for their respected search terms
