Lets say I want to make a Xfactor site for a niche where there is already one or all the domains are taken.

I could outrank the other Xfactor site I would say....

So would thebestgpsystem.com be as good as bestgpssystem.com?

Or could I use best-gpssystem.com and it work ok?

A lot of these micro niches seem to already have xfactor sites in them or just the domains are taken.

Money is tight so does anyone have any experience doing this?

I'd probably choose best-gps-system.com
Don put anything before your keyword, it is best to put bestgpssystems.com than thebestgpsystem.com

Google treats singular and plural differently, so make sure you choose carefully to be able to rank for the keyword phrase you're actually targeting.

But dashes or stop words in the middle or end do not matter?

Like say bestgpssystemsonline.com would still rank just as good as bestgpssystems.com ?

If keyphrase.com is taken, go with keyphrase.net or org, if both taken then you can consider key-phrase.com .

I have had good results when something like keyphrases.com (and .net, .org etc.) were taken with key-phrase.net Use dash not underscore. Plural / singular did not effect my rankings.

I had worse results with dashes. Best domains for micro-niches are .org and .com.
Also, the more your domain is similar to your primary keyword, the better your ranking would be.

Say, your keyword is "cassio watch review". Then a domain name like cassiowatchreview.org will rank better than bestcassiowatchreview.com given the same inbound links.
