I pretty much find good keywords - or at least I hope they're good - and build an optimized site based on the keywords. I then do BH tactics to get the site indexed in G for organic SERP's.

I'm starting to wonder if it makes better sense to run a PPC campaign for say, 12 hours, with the goal of being the first ad shown for the keyword. This way I'll get a good idea of the search volume and expected traffic BEFORE putting the time in to building an actual site for the keyword(s) I'm optimizing for. The tools I use for keyword research tell me that I can expect X clicks per day for the #1 position but I really have no way of telling if this is accurate or not unless I run a short-term test PPC campaign for the keyword.

Just wondering if anyone is using this type of approach to filter out a particular keyword in order to see if it's worth the time of actually building a site optimized for a particular keyword(s) or not.

Yeah, this is a known way to check data and get a more accurate view on the data, however you would need to run it for about a week to get accurate data. What you can do is make a really unappealing advert which will get 0 clicks, that way you can check it out for free.
