I'm curious about what you guys would do in my situation, so let me lay it out for you. SEO and website creation is something that I've only gotten into recently (about 2 months), but I've never been more infatuated with anything in my entire life. This is what I want to be doing as a career. But I'm forced to dedicate most of my time to university. I'm paying around USD$30k per year for a bachelor's degree at a top 20 business school. Given that SEO is only something I've picked up recently and not making an awful lot from atm, university is not something I plan on leaving behind just yet. But I am left wondering about a few things. At what point (income-wise) would you say the possibility of leaving your course may be more beneficial than a university degree? Is there anyway for me to take advantage of the fact that I am in university to do/learn something SEO-related? What would you do if you came up with a big idea that has $xxxxx+ potential?

You can get started without dropping out necessarily. Depends on your workload etc. but for me the structure of university was helpful at that stage of life.
+ you can always go full time when your business is taking off and needs more of your attention.

He's right ya know. It really is a nice piece of paper. I haven't used my diploma for anything, but at least i had fun in the process while i was acquiring it and costed practically nothing, it was a state-supported degree.

To OP: If you can't do both at the same time and you're fixed on your idea, can't you just put your studies on hold for a semester or two?

Why would you spend all that money every year and even consider dropping out?

You are mental. Get it done, worry about SEO later...

If you're lucky, you might get a job at McDonalds. That where most graduates end up!

'Would you like more fries with that, Sir?'

You attend a top 20 business school and yet you are not able to deduce at what point you would be better off doing SEO? Mate, ARE YOU FOR REAL? Assuming you live in a real country (aka the first world) there is no reason for you to worry about SEO or personal IM. Instead follow this easy guide to a happy life and financial freedom:

    Step 1)
Get a degree. Be sure to choose a profitable one; don't go with design, art or some other bullshit. Business, economics and law are all good choices. Math and coding are good too.

    Step 2)
Get a job related to your degree. If you followed the advise in step 1 this should be easy since you have developed a very useful skill set.

    Step 3)
    ???

    Step 4)
Bank your 100k USD / year, buy a nice house, a nice car, get a hot wife and bang her frequently. Don't forget to invest a little in a good index fond so you have funds for retirement (about 10k/year should be sufficient).

    Step 5)
Be happy that you never had to worry about SEO, IM, stupid Google updates or anything like that.

Now stop pondering about your future and get back to your studies...

While famous dropouts include Mark Zuckerberg, Steve Jobs, and Bill Gates, they had a unique niche and had significant success with a promising future when they made the decision to drop out. 2 months of "this SEO stuff is fun..." doesn't meet that criteria as you probably know. I'd say if you've got a skill that's pulling in as much as you'd make as a first year graduate, and that skill and income generation won't be wiped out by the next Google update, it might be time to consider dropping.

I'm feeling pretty much same and my studies don't really give me any actually useful knowledge, but the end is near so I'll just complete it only for that nice paper.

Then don't waste your time learning business. Knowing how to do business can't be taught in school, in my opinion. So I did electrical/computer engineering. Now I know how to code bots to automate my SEO stuff.

Learn business management and marketing carefully. You're in the top 20 business schools and that has some good things to learn from.

After getting the laminated piece of paper, get your seo firm into the top 20 seo firms (learn how to do that in university now)...

    I hope you got it.

Till then learn more about seo, there are oceans yet to be discovered by you and me too.. :)

Degrees have become more and more useless, but nothing is really useless. It depends on how you use it.
Also, you need to make up your mind on concentrate on one thing or do seo as a side project.

OP is a joke? btw Aslong you get a degree in a top university of first world in law or economics, ok. If you're the avg Joe, go for it and do your best.
But if you have the entrepreneurial fire, start a business WHILST going to university.
For sure, do not drop it tough.

Not really, a degree is still pretty often a main criteria for getting your application past the HR department's screening software.
