Uploading theme folders to Wordpress?

So I bought the TVAction theme and I need to upload the theme and plugin folders from my desktop to my website. I used cPanel to install wordpress through Softacalous. How do I get the folders to the right place in my file manager? I can't use the file manager itself because it only lets me upload individual files. I emailed the person I purchased the template from and he said I need to FTP into it. I have Filezilla but don't know how to upload the folder as a whole. If I drag and drop it takes all of the individual files.

So my questions are:

-Where exactly do the "theme" and "plugin" folders go in my file manager?
-What program(s) do I use to do it?

Thanks, all!

FileZilla should work fine.

From your explaination above, it seems that you were able to Connect to your web hosting with FileZilla, so that doesn't sounds like a problem.

So, where-ever you installed your WordPress site, go into the wp-content folder, inside will be other folders. You will copy your theme folder into the ../wp-content/theme/ path and copy your plugins into the ../wp-content/plugin/ path.

However, there is another way to do these installations, in the newer WP versions. You can just login into your admin dashboard of WP. There go to Plugins, and in the upper right coner of your dashboard, you'll see a button that indicates "install plugin". Click it. Then, on the Plugin's page, near the top of the page, you'll see a list of options;

* Search |
* Upload |
* Featured |
* Popular |
* Newest |
* Recently Updated

Select Upload. Then Browse to the folder where your "zipped" plugin resides. and click the install button. Once installed, it will provide the option to activate your plugin.

For Themes, you can do a similar action. Select "Appearance" on the left side of your admin dashboard. Then, in the upper right hand corner of the UI, select install Theme. Again, you'll see the selection as shown above, select "upload". Then browse to the Theme folder and click Install.

These are the basic two ways you can upload and install themes and Plugins...Hope it helps.

That was tons of help but I have one more problem. I downloaded the theme in a zip format, but if I unzip it, I have an individual plugin folder. So I can't upload a "zipped" plugin folder, just a zipped theme as a whole. The same goes for the theme folder.

As the above poster said.. But heres a step by step video for you.

Actually, if you go the 2nd option I mention above, through the WP dashboard, it is expecting a "zip" file to upload. It will unzip and extract the base folder for you.

If you go the 1st option, with FileZilla, then you just upload the folder (which is not zipped).

Did I understand your question correctly ?

I could upload the zipped file as a whole, but then I'd have theme folders, plugin folders, and a "how to" file all in the plugin section of WP.

Oh, ok, so whoever delivered it to you, put it all together in a single zip file.
So, you should have a theme folder and a plugin folder in it. Pull them out of the zip file and separate them 1st.

Then, if you want to use FileZilla, just upload the "theme" folder to ../wp-content/theme and upload the plugin folder to ../wp-content/plugin.
(I'm assuming there is only 1 theme folder and 1 plugin folder. If there is multiple, you will have to separate them).

Or once you have the theme folder and plugin folder separated, you re zip them individually and then use the WP upload features.

Let me know if this makes sense and more importantly, works for you...

I Have The Answer To Your Question

I use HostGator, but it should be pretty much the same with whatever host you use. I am assuming you have created the blog on your host server. If you did not do this, and you need help, let me know. Here are your steps:
  1. Download and save your theme on your computer
  2. Extract the theme to the folder of your choice on your computer
  3. The extraction utility will create a folder to put the theme in on your computer. These are the folders you will be uploading to the host.
  4. Note that the folders you are uploading to on your host would have been created when you created the blog on your host.
  5. You will now upload your theme to the server (I use HostGator) using an FTP client (I use FileZilla). You will be uploading your theme to the ?themes? folder which is inside the ?wp-content? folder (as mentioned, these folders were created with the creation of the blog). So the file structure would be something like this: root --> public_html --> domain/blog name --> wp-content --> themes
  6. To do this, drag the entire theme folder that you just extracted (with it?s contents and subfolders) into the theme folder on the host. For example, if you bought the theme TVAction, when extracting the files it creates a local folder with the same name (or something very similar). Drag that entire folder to the ?themes? folder on the host, so TVAction (or whatever it is called) and its? contents will now sit inside the themes folder on the host.
This should answer your question, but here are a few more things to do to set it up:
  1. Now you can install your Plug-ins in a similar manner (let me know if you need help here too)
  2. Login to your WordPress blog
  3. Change the theme by activating the one you just uploaded
  4. Activate your plug-ins
  5. Setup your theme
That is pretty much it. I hope this helps.

use FTP Filezilla in the wordprees directories find rheme folder and upload your theme .
