i have an ecommerce site and i have a bunch of articles on it and am wondering how often they need to be updated. im not trying to rank the articles, rather using them to link to my category pages which i am trying to rank. what is considered updating an article, going in and adding/deleting a few sentences?

First thing I would recommend is to put your articles on sites other than your money site. Use them to build links an push PR to you commerce site. Then update your commerce site regularly with new products, or even comments on existing products. You don't have to go to crazy with it. Just update it some every week and keep building links until you start to rank. After its ranking just update it once a month or so to keep things fresh until its really established. Then you'll be able to slack off on it.

Keep on doing article submission in instant approval sites, update your article or else post your new article frequently. Later on if you think site content should be updated then update it.

    Hi

If you keep editing what you have on your site then at no point will google see your site as one that has continuously added fresh content for its readers...

You can write short articles - 200 to 350 words or so and keep adding more...

Just throw an article up every couple of months. I've left sites for 6 months at a time before I start losing traffic, then I post an article and it bumps right back up to where it was. So every couple of months is heaps

No need to update content.. trust me if things are going good no need to update all the time .. if you have a good content it will work fine .. I know couple of sites with old data and still rank good on top .. so it's just a myth :)

In my opinion, content updation means adding new content on your site, rather than, rephrasing the existing one.

Since, you want to promote your article so that it can influence rankings of your product page... You better submit your articles on social bookmarking websites or blogging websites.
Leave you valuable comments on your niche related blogs with an anchor text pointing back to your article.

    Hope it help!
