If a site is trying to rank for keyword within a niche similar to lyric site or recipe site (which is based around dup content), will it even help rankings if only original unique content was being used?

Meaning will google like that I'm publishing unique content in a niche based off of duplicate content? Or will this prove hard to rank, and thus a better strategy would be to start duping up!

Really curious for your thought on this.

To answer a question like this you have to look at sites that have used the duplicate content (lyrics) and have still beaten other sites (that had the same content much before them). Check out how RapGenius did Seo. While their site had lyrics, which is considered duplicate content, they also put in the explanation of the lyrics in (their original content) This was deemed more relevant by Google and led to RapGenius rising to the top of the rankings in a very short time.

So Yes. Your original content will definitely help your site stand out from the others, even if you have substantial amount of duplicate content (lyrics) that all sites have. Think of ways in which you can provide value on top of the duplicate content (assuming your original content does that) and you will be fine.
