Shame really - linking to sites isn't what he was actually imprisoned for - it was the fact he profited from piracy.
He would likely have got a slap on the wrist if he made no money - but he was making £420,000 (almot 2/3rds of a million dollars) a year.
Good find - thanks given
Just saw this. site was making $35,000 a day. real shame.
Too bad for the owner, but this only could happened in USA, UK or other big European countries. From the other side, is that mean that if we link to site or blog that provide pirate movies or content , we could go in to the jail?
Thats some nice coin right there! Wonder how he monotised the traffic? anyone know? As I presume Adsense would have been a no no!
If my site was making that kinda money and was boarder line illiagal like that one, I'd move to a different country for a few years till made money and I sold the site.
Ah, the wonderful fked up justice system. 4 years for putting up a dodgy website, but murderers and rapists get less than that :\
Prosecutors said Vickerman made £250,000 in profit through adverts on the site in 2008, the year in which he tried to sell it for £400,000.
Piracy is part of the future of the world but this is really sad and pathetic. but you see the word Private Lobby in there and you realise that its all bullshit. Its all about profit.they don't like the world is changing so the big fat cats are kicking up a fuss.
£35,000 a month!
Why the hell did this guy not move to a country where you can run a website like that legally? he could have even come home after a few years with a ton of cash, or got someone else to run the business for him!
I seen that bro, but does anyone know what kinda ads he had? cpm? ppc? CPA? private advertising? media buys?
The site has been taken down but I've never been on the site when it was up.
Actually it was not a reason. cause there are many sites who are doing the same thing. but they are not making that huge money that's why they are not in problem. If you become successful its OK but if you become super successful then it can be a problem :>)
Wow, thats pretty cool how much money he was actually pulling in from it. Though I'm always surprised that when people do something like that, they don't take proper precautions to avoid getting caught.
With that type of money involved, it is very hard to run below the radar.
35,000 a month is not that much for the radar you're talking about. Its a normal salary of top managers in hi-tech companies. For example, Matt Cutts probably earns more.
But in any case, the above doesn't smell like justice. He could get less for killing people.
True, and investment bankers make millions stealing from the rest of us and tanking the economies of every country in the world and will never do that much time.
This is a report from the the local paper:
If you look in the cache, you can read the SurfTheChannel's owner's version of events.
'Anton Vickerman' claims he was innocent and his site was one of leading video search engines, but did not stream content and a private company owned by the American movie industry had him "illegally" under surveillance..
Best bit at the end:
bummer, hope he did the sensible thing and kept the cash safe from the PoCA
I cannot believe he is convicted for embedding videos from youtube.
United states courts say it isn't a copyright violation: http://www.geekosystem.com/embedding-video-copyright-infringement/.
Why hasn't anyone charged Google/Bing/Yahoo with the same thing? I mean, surely in the search results somewhere there are links to illegal content, piracy, hacking, bestiality and the whole nine yards? Google is also doing it knowingly just like this guy was without any filters or warnings. This is the first thing my lawyers would have argued.
Agreed and how many bankers went to jail after almost tanking the world economy a few years back?
Separate names with a comma.
