Surprised not to have seen any threads about ufc 189 leading up to it last night. Any fans of the ufc here? I'm more of a bandwagon guy as I've only recently got into it watching the rise of Irish man Conor mcgregor..

Last nights fights where some of the best I've ever seen.. Then the final fight with mcgregor was unreal! Serious feeling of Irish pride when he finished Mendes off ;)

I was a bit worried when Mendes kept taking him to the ground as that's where Mendes is supposed to shine as he's a wrestler at heart.. but Jesus that Conor can take a beating then get to his feet again each time.. As he said before the fight round 2 he's gone - true to his word as always and this guy has a lot of words lol

Lawler was absolutely insane last night, the main event was good but Mendes kept trying to take him down and it just wasn't getting far cause Conner kept sprawling and had really good scrambles. Great fights.

The lawler fight was the fight of the night imo fucking unreal! Mendes thought he could beat Conor on the ground but he underestimated the man :D

Same here but I think boxings days are numbered on the world stage anyway.. Ufc is just getting bigger and bigger.. McGregor has played a big part in that with his publicity material lol

Well t0mmy i am a fan of UFC too, Too many TKO/Knee Finishes and what not in a Single Event.

Connor vs Mandes was a good fight but i believe Lawler vs Rory steal the show.

Good to See Connor Backed all his trash talk, Ate lot of elbows while on ground but finally won with just seconds remaining.

Now Connor VS Aldo would be awesome.

Deffos the lawler fight was the best of the lot!

Ah Aldo is finished mentally Conor got to him and after seeing what Conor did with Mendes last night - a guy Aldo had to do 5 rounds with and only won on a split decision (plus left the ring in bad shape) I doubt he will be looking to fight Conor any time soon.

I read he had to loose 25 lbs in 5 days and it was showing on his face Still winning the fight was a Great achievement.

Conor vs aldo will happen but will be delayed and no doubt will be hyped even more... Aldo has the Championship belt, Conor won Interim Championship today.

I've read articles saying the problem was Aldo is on performance enhancers which they don't check for in Brazil and only recently started checking for in ufc in America so this was why he pulled out.. Not enough time to flush the drugs out of his system. Dana white said in an interview that 3 independent doctors cleared Aldo and it was just bruised ribs.. Who knows really but I know one thing he will be crapping his pants after seeing last nights.

Dana said the fight will be in Vegas and if Conor wins his first defense will be in Dublin - you can't imagine the absolute atmosphere and party that will go on in Dublin if that happens. I hope it does and sooner rather than later!

Was really looking forward to the Connor vs Aldo fight, shame that Aldo got injured but these things happen. I'm glad they didn't let him fight, I want to seem them both in tip top condition ready to kick some ass. Going to be a great fight when it happens

Ha ha, Dana Also Confirmed Aldo Would have Probably made 4 Millions in this match but hey bruised ribs are more important :).

We Could see people were Cheering for Conor in the match in MGM, Few people are hating on him because of all the talking he does but its all good until he keeps Winning.

Exactly! Which would actually lead me to believe the performance enhancer rumor I mean he would be out of the UFC for good had he tested positive for drugs and shamed too.. So he used the old broken rib excuse.. Can't wait to see when they actually do meet!

Conor talks a lot but he also backs it up.. If you can back it up with substance then you can talk all day. He's also made himself a small fortune with this "persona" of his in a short space of time.. There is method behind his madness lol

Dana said, so it should be taken with a grain of salt, that the rib injury was old. Aldo could not make weight.

I was skeptical with Conor. He showed questionable BJJ in the past. Last night he showed great scrambles and sprawls, as always good distance / timing / cage control. What surprised me was how good he looked on the ground. He looked patient and was waiting for Chad to try to finish him. When he did make a move, Conor countered and escaped.

It looked like a tough SOB who did not care about looking like he won the fight, but winning it in the easiest way possible. That is exactly what he did. He took superficial damage that will not provide long term damage, waited, did not go for Chad's head but worked the body just like a boxer would in a longer fight, and when he say an opportunity he capitalized, which is an instinct you cannot teach.

Impressive win last night. Although Chad took the fight on short notice, the way Connor handled one of the most well rounded fighters in the Game who specializes in his supposed weakness was impressive.

    Another excellent win for conor!

I've been watching mma since 2003 and he is definitely one of a kind, within a few fights I'm sure he will cement himself as one of the greatest.

What did we learn about conor this fight?

    - His chin can survive a nuclear bomb. Chad mendes hit him with some shots that have floored others and conor just took them like nothing.

    - He can get taken down by elite wrestlers

    - can get kept down and elbowed/punched by elite wrestlers

I'm a huge conor fan and I was seriously worried. Even though he was lighting mendes up on the feet, theres only so many of those elbows you can take. One of those to the right place of the eye/nose/face can end the fight.

Notice how conor continuously peppered mendes' body with shots. Spinning back kicks, front kicks, punches. For people that havn't done combat sports : every time you get hit on the body your stamina-bar goes down 1-10%. A good spinning back kick to the ribs/liver area (watch first round, conor lands a few) can seriously just drain your body of all cardio/stamina/will to fight.

Beautiful display and makes me proud to have Irish blood running through my veins :p (as cheesy as that may sound)

(PS. respect to mendes, tough SOB taking that fight on 12 days, makes me wonder how he would perform with full preperation. Think conor would still win but it would be closer, maybe round5)

What surprised me was Connor was not aiming for a liver shot. When I competed I avoided then despite learn Dutch Kickboxing because it leaves you open. But against an opponent like Chad, the risk of the fight dragging on was a huge risk. I thought he would go full power to the liver when doing body shots. He was perfectly fine with working the body / sternum / ribs and played his game like a fiddle. Incredible control he had.

I think he wasn't going full power because it might have exposed him to chads takedowns.

Waar heb je getraind ? :D

Smell the cheese ;p But yeah there was a documentary on earlier in the night "the mcgregor effect" about what he's done for the sport especially in Ireland.. it was fascinating and humbling to watch - little kids who would be doing fuck knows what instead in the Gym training with their mcgregor hair cuts lol class!

Was good to see them show each other respect after it all too.. a side to Conor I hadn't seen before.

Pound for pound, i would say McGregor has the hardest punch in the UFC. Hes only 145 but he wobbles guys with half jabs, I am suprised at how easy Mendes went down as he can usually take a good few hits.

All in all it was a great card. I knew Connor lived up to the hype. It was never hype for me, watching his old fights you can tell he is an elite athlete with the mindset of a champion.I have been watching the UFC since I was 16, around 8 years ago, and I have never been as excited about the future of a fighter as I am with Conor.

That's exactly what he was doing. Throwing at partial power, aiming for places to slow him down. Its hard to throw an elbow on the ground if you have sore ribs. Chad may not have even realized he was playing into Connor's hand. Impressive display.

With Connor's persona he will excel MMA in all of Europe. It is funny to see haters. His competition are: Not as good strikers, or were as good but are on the decline (Aldo, for example).

While other guy's are playing the Game of catching up on Wrestling, earning a Brown Belt in BJJ, or learning how to throw a combo well, Connor learned how to use the Cage, mastered movements like an elite athlete, and simply outclasses even superior fighters (In terms of technical skill).

I see some Ali in him. It is the mental fortitude in a community of fighters who 'train' three days a week, a few hours a day, and play X - Box the rest of the time. Exceptions like Chad who do Cross - Fit 24 / 7 and are not working with elite Boxers, Wrestlers, or BJJ coaches still are superior athletes than the competition but do not respect what it is like to want to play in the big leagues.

The Octagon or Cage is not a wrestling mat or boxing ring. The floor is different, the space is different, your angles are different. Guy's like Chad who move forward with power may have worked before, but the limit of this is they plan to use the cage to get a take down or fight in the middle.

The distance, timing and control are different. It is not even close. Connor is playing a different Game. I wonder when everyone else will realize this?

What do you mean not quite right? Of course he finished him off.. He hit him with a serious combo after Mendes had used up probably the last of what strength he had left on the floor and was already badly beatin to the body, the guy was finished the ref had to step in.. I don't know much about the sport but I know there was nothing foul in this match.

    Night night..
