Is it bad for SEO to have TWO h1 tags on the same page? My theme has the site-title at the top in h1 tags (which is an EMD) and than the static page at the bottom also has the title in h1 tags.

Is that going to affect the ranking? Should I just remove the H1 tag off the site-title and leave it for post/pages? Or keep the site-title (which is obviously the keyword) as H1, and than have post/page title as H2?

    What do you guys think?

It's totally fine to have multiple h1, h2, h3, hx tags on the same page as long as it does not look spammy or is considered to be keyword stuffing.
But having multiple meta title and meta description tags is bad.

Okay, what about if the <h2> tag comes before <h1> tag in the page? I just changed my template so that on single post pages, only the single post is in h1, but the site title (which appears in the source code before the post title) is now in H2... is THAT bad?

I've seen it both ways but couldn't honestly tell you the difference as far as seo results are concerned. I've read that the h1 tags are supposed to be constant throughout the site. Meaning each page should contain the same exact info in the h1.

I'm trying to figure this out myself.

Few weeks ago, my site's ranking dropped when searching for mydomain

Checking my WP site, I noticed that in the header where the logo is place, there is no H1 tag defined.. I checked out some other themes such as Arras for example and they all carry h1 tags for the logo section.

I've put that in place now (but will take atleast a week to see if there is any improvement).

Now my only concern is that when i check an article, there are two h1 tags inserted. The first one has h1 tag with alt as mydomain and the second h1 is for the article title.

Not sure how this will work out.. maybe my site will get back to #1 position but the articles might take a beating... or as I read in a couple of other threads in other forums.. maybe it doesn't matter because the two h1's aren't really spammy and secondly if I go by logic, it would read as mydomain -> my article.

Hope some experienced seo's could shed some light on this.

Make your blog look natural, don't make it look like you are only looking to rank. Google does take manual action.

Well, I will say not to use H1 more than once (from a personal experience).

Thesis WP theme is said to be the best SEO theme, you can go to the site and check how they are using H1, H2 and other tags on different pages.

I think you are trying to split hairs with this considering what is going on in search at the moment. Where, how many, what order H1 tags is in is about 1 - 10,000th of what it takes to rank a page, how it ranks, and what it ranks for. Hell, some of my best ranking pages dont even have h1 tags... Anymore I just use H1 H2 H3 H4 tages to display text in different sized fonts, boxed, underlined, etc through CSS controlling an element. I could care less where on the page it is or if it is even on the page and I have seen no difference at all in my ranking.

Using Main keyword in H1 tag (with or without extra words),Try to keep the ?Keyword? at first.Use H2 tags to break down the main topic: Use questions like ?How to effectively use Header tags:? or synonyms like ?Overuse of H1 html tags? (See I substituted ?header? with H1 and ?tags? with ?html? tag or ?H1 or H2 tags- which one to use?. The scenario may change with every post but if you use a little brain you can find a way to write SEO effective and still reader friendly H1, H2 tags.Don?t use H3 with SEO in mind. Just use them with the natural flow of the article to make it more reader friendly. Ignore it if it is not needed.Do not use H4, H5?? tags just because you want better SEOed page. They don?t carry much importance anyways. Don?t sacrifice reader satisfaction for SEO.- This is most important.
