Everywhere I see the advice is "follow blah blah, use this use that, then unfollow the people who aren't following you back, and follow more people. Repeat."

Wouldn't it make more sense to just gradually unfollow everyone? So then you can follow even more people (because there is a limit to how many you can follow at once)?

I mean it's not like people will unfollow you just because they see you unfollow them. Or will they? Do they get some sort of big notification that you unfollowed them? Does it make them unfollow you automatically? What incentive do I have to only unfollow the people who aren't following back?

    Thanks in advance.

Well it is upto you whether you want to unfollow who are not following you!
This advise is only for marketers I think..
Btw,play with twitter with gay abandon,do the all the things imaginable, only dont overdo..Play by their rules and dont get banned!;)
    Cheers!

I think (my personal opinion) is because if you follow the person back they are less likely to unfollow you because you returned the favor.

That is far more likely to get you banned from twitter. People rarely get banned for adding followers by "following back and unfollowing" as long as it's done at a moderate pace. I rarely see people doing what you describe, partly because it's tracked and dealt with fairly consistently.

The reason that "you" want to unfollow only those who don't follow back is also for your own benefit. Getting a reputation as someone who follows back is very beneficial. Having a close to equal follower/following ratio will let people know you are someone who legitimately follows people back. This can get you added to followback lists. I know when I was new to twitter I checked for people who followback on lists, and I didn't add those who didn't have good ratios. Now I just regularly delete those who unfollow me.
