So.. give me a minute before you start typing your strongly worded complaint that begins with something like:

    "This is unacceptable! SJW's | Neo-Nazi's | feminists | meninists | Trump supporters | Trump opponents | Liberals | Libertarians | Mods | Newbies | others <get_term($groupofpeopleIdislike) > * are ruining this once-great forum.
They're picking on good members who just happen to share the same set of beliefs as I do. Just because our beliefs are different, we should be able to express them - that's Freedom of Speech!! "

    *delete as appropriate.

Regardless of what you may think, this isn't directed at anyone in particular - it's more a response to the many, many reports and messages I've had over the last few months where people think they're being denied their rights to freedom of speech. So, let's explore this concept of "Freedom of Speech" and how it works on Black Hat World.

(fyi - feel free to constructively disagree with me here - it's open for discussion but abuse or inflammatory comments directed at anyone will be deleted and the member infracted)

We get this a lot. Once a member has over 100 posts, they have hardly any posting restrictions.

They are able to post virtually anything they want to. But when you can say what you want, you're going to have to hear stuff you don't like because, in return, others can reply with anything they want.
And mods are able to delete those posts/threads and infract/ban the person who made them.

We've got rules. You have the freedom to break the rules but you do not have the right to expect there are no consequences, whilst we have the responsibility to enforce them.

Quick reminder of the rules specific to the lounge:

I've circled that sentence because it doesn't tend to register with most people. The rules aren't created in a vacuum, they're regularly updated in response to the issues we face most often. This rule came about because there are certain topics that will always spark conflicts and end up in abuse and flame wars. Politics and Religion are the most easily classified, is all.

So.. your freedom of speech works like this:

    • You have the right to say what you want
    • You do not have the right to demand your opinion is respected
    • You have the right to be offended by someone else's statement
    • You do not have the right to expect that no-one should ever offend you
    • You have the right to complain about someone's subjective opinion
    • You do not have the right to expect your opinion takes priority over others
    • You have the right to dislike a mod's opinion and express this
    • You do not have the right to demand that they don't have an opinion
    • You have the right to disagree with someone
    • You do not have the right to stop other people disagreeing with you
In return, we have the responsibility to:
    • Stop mutual offence turning into personal abuse
    • Make sure no-one's harrassed because of their race, gender, religion, culture etc.
    • Delete anything that breaks the rules
    • Keep the forum running smoothly by keeping the majority of our members happy the majority of the time.

This means that we do NOT have the responsibility to treat everyone's opinions and comments equally. If you're posting stuff that's likely to upset the majority of the forum, it'll almost certainly be deleted or the thread shut. This isn't because because you're speaking too much truth for us to handle, the reason is far more mundane:

It's because your controversial comments make the forum less enjoyable for the majority of other members and, as a result, your value to the community decreases.

5 people raging against the system do not carry equal weighting with several thousand other members who are bored with hearing it.

    In summary:

    It' simple isn't it?

Someone has the freedom of speech to say something stupid.
Everyone else has the freedom of speech to tell them it's stupid.

    Right?

I see some posts targeted at Indians racially.

People don't get 3 things right.
    1. Not all Indians are poor. ( HERE )
    2. India has World's largest YOUTH population. ( HERE ). So, you will see more job applicants from India for online work.
    3. We were pushed backward because of our mistakes & innocence ( past centuries ).

Ya, we're cheap right now but will catch up ;)

Pretty simple rules but seems so hard for some to don't break them!

    Great post @Apricot

It's also important to remember that a lot of members may come from places where free speech isn't really a thing, so may not know how to express it appropriately:

    Interesting point that you make.

It's a given that a lot of "LEDC's" are starting to catch up, but it's not actually as clear-cut as you think.

While India does have a GDP of ~$2.5t, a whopping 76% is owned by the top 10%, and 53% by the top 1% (Source)

Enlightenment of youth is the only way to bring that ratio proportional.

So we can post political threads as long as they dont encourage any discussions, debates and/or arguments?

One question regarding this bulletpoint from your post.
    • You have the right to disagree with someone
    • You do not have the right to stop other people disagreeing with you
What constitutes "stopping" other people from disagreeing with you. Does piss off, fuck off fall in the category of disagreeing with someone or "stopping" them from disagreeing with me?

Great stuff (you too @Apricot but that goes without saying). I'd love to see the above graph annually from 1900 to present. Those would be some interesting numbers.

Not much point having political threads without mentioned things.

Where was the graph over freedom of speach from?
