I have a small review site in the fitness niche that was earning me some cash.

Its an EMD of the said product and was made to sell only 1 product. Although I wanna "beef" it up with more content to make more cash, traffic, trust, etc.

I am somewhat of an expert in the topic at hand and could easily make a legit stand alone authorative site one day.

Probelm is the fitness niche is fucking huge and I dont wanna waste my time writing good shit to be buried in SERPs, hence why I never tried.

Question is, if I add my good authorative articles to this puny EMD site, and wake up one day with 50 articles that are earning more from landing pages, adsense and reccommendations than the initial product review......can I later buy a new domain 301 redirect, change the homepage, scrap the product review and flip it around into an authorative site?

Like I said I could start a new site with great content from scratch, but I am unsure if it would rank and dont really want to take a risk and waste efforts. This site is already here and ranking for "x product review".

Is this a good strategy? Or would the product review and EMD forever tarnish this site?

Sounds like a tough strategy, why not focus on building another site and having both rank? I understand what you are trying to do but your gonna risk a lot when you send that 301 in the future. Who knows what actual value will be passed along with a 301 in the future. I'd say build 2 sites out, one for the EMD and one for the review site.

Try it on your niche site. If the content ranks and you want to set up a separate authority site then just rel-canonical them to the new site.

Or better still put them on a separate site with no other SEO work done to it, keep tweaking according to PHPbuilt's Authority Site guide, and when it gets as good as it can the rel-canonical it to the niche site (so you know your content is as good as it gets before any push from the work you've done on the niche site). You still have the option of building an authority site in the future and doing it again.
